Description

Very rare opportunity! Unfortunately I must sell this beauty at this time. I know as do the experts that this one year only Duetto is destined to become one of the most desirable Alfa's available. It is poised to leap greatly in value in the very near future. It has been picked by many as one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Don't be confused by the similar but less valuable boat tails of 1969. This is the rare one year only Duetto made famous by the Dustin Hoffman movie. "The Graduate". I intended to have this car offered at Barrett-Jackson in West Palm but broke my pelvis so could not make it. However it was estimated that it would probably sell in the $50. 00. range. There must have been something in the air in 1967. because it seems that the whole world changed overnight. It was everywhere; in music. theater. social mores. political unrest. technology and. of course. automobiles. The height of the muscle car era was in swing and the Summer of Love was soon to start. Meanwhile. Alfa Romeo introduced its spectacular Duetto Spider and it was noticed by everyone who followed automotive design. The car featured a sharp. razor-like nose. glass-covered headlights. a classic scallop running down the side and a boat-like taper at the rear. It looked sleek. sexy and Italian in every way. Interiors were pure sports car. but luxurious enough to keep the driver comfortable during longer trips. Instrumentation was excellent and the overall feel of the car superb. Driving it was pure fun. due to its nimbleness and ease of control. The Duetto's engine displaced 1570 cc's and produced 125 horsepower. which was more than enough to move the 2. 00 pound car sprightly. Four-wheel disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering made its handling exceptional. and 23 mpg was pretty good for an era when nobody cared about fuel costs and the typical American car was getting 15 mpg. This 2 owner car had been sitting in a garage since 1972 when I purchased it hence the low miles. The nice thing was it was all there and all original and not messed with. The odometer shows 39. 00 miles which I believe to be accurate but cannot verify. The first owner was a serviceman that brought it back from Germany where it was originally imported to. The second owner was an automotive engineer. We started going through the body first looking for rust. Fortunately it was very solid with the exception of some truly small perforation in the drivers side floor and the beginning of rust in the inner drivers side rocker. The small perforations could have been filled but the decision was made to replace the floor. Original steel replacement parts were purchased from Wolf fabrication and professionally installed along with any rust removal and metal replacement in the inner rocker. The underside was coated with the expensive and best rust preventative called POR 15 to keep any corrosion at bay for years. The gas tank and lines were removed and professionally cleaned and resealed. Worn suspension parts were replaced. Brakes were rebuilt on the rear and larger ATE type brakes were replaced on the front from the original obsolete Dunlop parts. All of the trim was removed and the body was completely stripped to metal and resprayed as original. The base/clear paint was the original 67' Duetto paint code and matched well to the small areas left of original paint. I would describe the trim brightwork as good driver quality overall. The interior seats were refurbished or recovered as original and it still has not only the original floor mats but the original rear drape both of which were reconditioned. A brand new top was recently added as of 2 weeks ago. All of the windows work greatAll of the lights work as well as the gauges. I have just replaced all of the tires with all new Coker Firestone radials for original size but better ride. The engine was has great compression at around 140. Two weeks ago I spent over $3500. in completely rebuilding the weber carbs and tweaking the timing and other systems to ensure that this car is in top running condition and is a blast to drive. The oil pressure at idle registers around 40 lbs. and around 60 when hot under load. The 5 speed gearbox shifts well with no grinding in any gear. I received a letter from the Alfa Romeo Archives in Italy and discovered the following: Dear Mister _____. /p> With reference to your request we are informing you as follows. According to our documentation files. the chassis number AR 661276 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 “Duetto” (105. 03) USA. manufactured on the 14th July 1966 and sold on the 22nd July 1966 to Alfa Romeo Germany. Frankfurt. The body colour is red. with black skai interiors. Yours. Sincerely. /p>This documentation matches the VIN number andshows that it is a rare European import. I am offering this rare and rapidly rising in value beauty for much less than similar selling for over $50. 00. Good examples like this are becoming very hard to find!*Please feel free to email with questions and to setup an inspection of the car. Inspections must take place before bidding not after.
