This Corvette Roadster is truly a special car. It is not just one of those older “rolling-restorations”, ighly modified resto-rods, r concours specials. This ‘Vette has something that is very hard to come by these days: character. This is not just something that you can build into a car. It isn’t even something you can get with a neglected barn-find. It is only something that happens when the “right” single-owners love and drive a car for more than 45-years. Just one look at this special car and you can see the past owners’ passion and enthusiasm.

The recent husband and wife owners purchased this Corvette in March of 1968. The original owner purchased the car from Harry Mann Chevrolet in October 1965. Harry Mann Chevrolet of Los Angeles was known for delivering most of the special Corvettes for the L.A. area. This car was one of first three 427/450 cars sold in Southern California for 1966. Unfortunately, ust a couple of years later, he original owner was drafted and sent off to the Vietnam War. The next owners were in their 20’s, ecently married (they took this Corvette on their honeymoon), nd huge automotive enthusiasts. They had no idea that this special car would become a 45-year long relationship. The key with them owning this car for so long is they built a long list of memories making the car truly a big part of their family. Selling this car was a very long and difficult decision for them. However, hey realized that they were no longer enjoying the car like they used to.

The owners enjoyed this car not by waxing it in their garage all weekend long and only taking it out for a Sunday drive. Nope! They enjoyed it in a special way that would make Briggs Cunningham very proud….they drove it and then drove it some more. From 1968-1973, hey competing at SCCA Solo II and even some Solo I events. They spent over 40-weekends each year at their local autocross and racetracks. Local circuits they visited included Riverside International Raceway (did over 150 mph on back straight with a best lap time of 1:43), omona Fairgrounds Race Facility, arlsbad Raceway, anta Maria Airport, illow Springs Raceway, akersfield (Famoso) Race Facility, an Jose Raceway, ntario Motor Speedway, nd San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium. They also took their Vette to the Orange County International Raceway to compete in the Top Eliminator drag races. Under the Road Race configuration (no drag slicks, ust street tires) they did a 12.75 second run at 117mph…earning them “Top Eliminator” for the event. This car’s competitive history is recorded with countless dash plaques and over 192 trophies (see pictures) in just 4-years. Also, e have many pictures of these owners competing with the car in “the day.” In fact, ne picture shows the wife accepting the 1971 SCC/SCC Slalom Championship Champion Class B-W (women) award from Richie Ginther (see pictures). She won this award in 1970,1971, nd 1972. They also won 1st place at the 1971 WSCC (Western State Corvette Council) in both days for both women and men’s classes. Other competitive highlights include the Powder-puff Top Eliminator Champion for three years in a row as well as Men’s Champion for Top Eliminator.

In 1969, he owners had the original Mosport Green paint removed and shot it with a fresh coat of Fathom Green. Then, hey had the Mosport Green stripes added. At the same time, hey custom added a third pair of taillights. The paint job was over 18 coats of lacquer, hich it still wears today. Besides the paint job, aillights, nd roll bar, he only other cosmetic modification they made to the car was they added a set of original factory GM knock-offs from a 1965 model-year (their friend’s car). The knock-offs were installed in 1968, ncluding the spare (set of 5).

After the 1973 race season, he owners decided to retire their Corvette from competition and use it more as a weekend car. They even started entering it into concours events like the Historic Motor Sports Association Concours in Santa Barbara, A. With the 11:1 engine compression and high octane leaded gas becoming scarce, he owners decided to have the engine rebuilt. Of course, hey are extremely picky about who touches their cars, o they had the “best-of-the-best” rebuild the engine. In 1985 (about 43,000 miles ago), hey took the car to “Thunder Alley” in Culver City, A. This automotive enclave was the home to the likes of TRACO Engineering (Penske/Donohue TransAm fame) and Dick Guldstrand (see attached picture of owner with Dick Guldstrand). TRACO did a full engine rebuild, educing the compression to 9.2:1 so it could run on unleaded pump gas. Also, he horsepower was bumped up to 490. Engine details include:

The owner has the complete engine specifications and blueprinting documents from TRACO except for the CAM specs, hich were proprietary.

We helped them sell the car in 2013 to another vintage sports car enthusiast who participates in several vintage rallies each year including the Mille Miglia. He thought this was the perfect car for some of his California rally adventures. Shortly after purchasing the car, e had a local specialist go through everything and make sure it was ready for a 1,000-mile event: Targa California. It performed great. Unfortunately, n the way home, loose air cleaner bolt got sucked in the intake. He immediately stopped and had the car towed to a Northern California expert: Randy Peterson of Peterson Motorsports. They pulled the engine and delivered it to John with LJ Corvette Motorworks in Napa, alifornia for a rebuild. Over $15k was spent which included:

Steam/boil block/re-bore and hone

Resurface heads

Replace rocker arms and pushrods

The condition of this car is timeless and full of character. The paint has patina from over 40-years of use. The fender lips were cut to make room for the 10-inch competition tires. There is some expected paint cracking and checking as well. The gasket from the gas tank filler neck wore out and as a result, he gas fumes bumbled the stripe paint around that area. Personally, t would be sacrilegious to touch the paint. It looks great and the patina certainly adds character and validation to the car’s history. The interior is all-original and in remarkable condition considering the age and use. There is a small splitting of the seam on the seat bottom of the passenger seat (see pic). Everything inside works properly, xcept the clock. Even the original radio works. The soft top was replaced over 20 years ago and shows some age with discoloration of the rear plastic and a few minor tears (see pics).

This is a surprisingly easy and docile car to drive. It starts easily with just one pump of the gas and idles smoothly. The power is incredibly strong with no hesitation. Steering is light and very responsive. It is nicely set up for performance street driving. The brakes feel great with excellent bite. The gearbox and clutch perform flawlessly with no grinding or slipping. This is really an ideal car for exclusive vintage touring events or maybe even some premier vintage Gentleman’s races like Monterey.

Included with this Corvette is the original factory spare (see pic) and extensive receipts throughout the years.
