Description

INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION

You are viewingmy 1980 Dodge Mirada CMX.Born with a 318-V8 (5.2L) engine, his Mirada now sports a high performance 440 cubic inch V8 engine and a 727 "TorqueFlite" three-speed automatic transmission, nd a Dana 60 Sure-Grip 3.55.1 rear axle. The vehicle still has factory power-steering and power brakes but does not have AC.

Let's deal with this point early on. There were never any big-block J-bodies from the factory. Manufactured from 1980 to 1983, he J-body platform was shared by the "Mirada" and "Cordoba" nameplates, nd only about52,000total Miradas were made over those four years. About 5,000 top-of-the line CMX's were made in 1980.

All the work on this Mirada was done in1998, r approximately 5,000 miles ago. The most significant elements of the powertrain content are described here:

  • Engine: 1978-MY 440 Block (New when built, tandard bore),1978-MYCylinder Heads, New when built, orted, alvetrain components all new from Direct Connection),1966-MY440 Steel Crank (polished and balanced as a rotating assembly),1966-MYHP rods (new, esized and shot-peened), nbsp;Forged TRW Pistons (11.1 compression ratio),Hydraulic non-roller"Purple Cam" 284/510, igh Volume Oil Pump, olley Dominator Aluminum Intake, olley 750 CRM Double Pumper 4 Barrel, nbsp;Direct Connection Headers, emote Oil Filter, ftermarket tach on dash, ftermarket gauge cluster under the dash.and a Vacuum Canister (given the cam profile it is needed at idle RPMs).
  • Transmission: Rebuilt 727 TorqueFlite, 8M Shift kit, 1-inch TCI Dominator Torque Converter (2800 RPM Stall), nd B&M Ratchet Shifter. There is a line-lock system and switch is located where column-shift used to be and amber indicator light is on the afttermarket gauge cluster..
  • Rear End: Dana 60, ure-Grip, .55:1 Gear Ratio (from a 1969 GTX "Six Pack" car, ebuilt at time of installation in this car).

To complete the installation, e added a custom made, true" dual exhaust (including catalytic converters and tail pipes) with FlowMaster 40's. The gas tank is from a A-Body so it doesallow clearance for a tail pipe exit under the rear bumper.

All gauges workbutthe digital clock and cigarette lighterdo notfunction. The wheels 15x8.5 and 15x10 Center Line "Auto Drags" in polished aluminum. The tires are BF Goodrich Radial T/A's 245/60 and 295/50 size.

This Mirada was professionally refinished in "Candy Apple RedMetallic"(a 1998 Dodge color, n base coat/clear coat). The snout is from a 1980 Cordoba LS - I liked the "cross-hair" look of this piece. We didnotreplace the plastic quarter panel extensionsso they are original and somewhat brittle (aftermarket replacements are available now). During the refinishing, e notednoprevious body work andnofloor pan, rame, r trunk pan rust (or repairs of rust) whatsover(exceptdriver-side front sub-frame was repaired by previous owner).

The external bright, ubber and painted trim is in good driver quality condition and consistent with the age of the vehicle (so there are assorted scratches, ings, racks and other age-related patina etc.). All the glass is good, xcept a four inch repaired crack (passenger side middle, ear cowl in windshield). The driver door window regulator is worn to extent it will not completely raise the window so you have pull the glass the last inch.

The dash panel is fairly straight, ut is faded in areas but is otherwise intact. There is also the common fading of the "brushed-aluminum plastic" surfaces on dash face. The seats and carpet are original, re in very good shape showing normal wear butwithoutdefects such as splits, tains, r tears except driver side upper left at shoulder level. The door panels are in good shape and the upper door rails have the common breakage and passenger door light lens is missing.

We built this car to be a nice street/strip machine, ith emphasis on "street". We used Direct Connection recommended parts and plans for a reliable, igh-octane pump gas 500HP and 500 ft. lbs. torque. While not dynoed, his Mirada feels like I came close my goals, exceptit does need octane boosters to run at its best.

It's a very strong running vehiclebutyour expectations of what you want it for may vary from mine depending on your objectives for it. I used some of my other purpose-built cars (tied-off frames, rive shaft loops, oll cages, tc.,) to go lead-footing around and showing off, ut this car was NOT built for serious competition drag racing.

This 1980 Dodge Mirada CMX is a nice, ldmodifiedvintage cruiser. If your goal is to harvest the powertrain for something else, hat's of course solely your business. But don't tell me that before you buy it. Ihope it finds a good home with an appreciative new J-body lover like me who will maintain and improve upon it where needed -- and keep it intact.
