In the early 1980s California entrepreneurs Neil Glassmoyer and Mark Goyettfounded Modena Design and Development in El Cajonto manufacture the Modena SpyderCalifornia, Ferrari 250 GT Spyder-based sports car that far exceededthe quality and finish of other independent offerings of the time.An early mention of the new creation in "Car and Driver" magazinedrew the attention of Hollywood director John Hughes, ho was in theplanning stages of making Ferris Bueller's Day Off, n which a ModenaDesign sports car would have a pivotal role.
Based on the prototype Spyder California design by Scaglietti, he Modenaincorporated the original's steeply raked windshield, nset front turn signals,deep horizontal front grille, rominent hood scoop, ront fender vents andsweeping profile. Beneath the fiberglass skin was a very sturdy rectangularsteel tube frame designed by the late Bob Webb, n accomplished Indy carfabricator who worked on Brooks Stevens' 1952 Excalibur race cars andlater on Roger Penske's all-conquering Zerex Special. Mounting independentfront suspension and a solid rear axle with 4-link attachments, Panhard rodand Torsion bars, ebb's chassis was described by Car and Driver as "remarkably rigid,more so in fact than the real 1961 Ferrari".
