Description

You can forget keeping a low profile, because this 1938 Ford 5-window coupe has a high-impact look and the performance to match. Impeccably built to the highest standards, it has a subtle air to it that only serves to highlight the incredible attention to detail throughout. With a Ford stroker motor for power, all the power accessories you'd want, and 100% ready to enjoy, this is one of the finest rods we've featured in a long time.Let's just get the color out of the way first, because there's no avoiding a bright yellow hot rod. If you're like many car guys, it's a breath of fresh air in a field that's just overflowing with red and black cars. No flames, no graphics, and all the sheetmetal is as Henry intended, which only serves to highlight the beautiful build quality that much more. Fit and finish are outstanding, with great gaps and incredibly flat panels that mean someone worked a lot of overtime getting things right. Almost all the original trim was retained, including the swept-back grille and iconic teardrop headlamps and culminating in a pair of teardrop taillights that are now filled with LEDs. Bumpers, running boards, hinges, door handles, and even the trunk handle are still in place, so it has a classic old car look, but details like the frenched rear license plate, nosed hood, and one-piece windshield give it a custom look that's very, very cool indeed. There's beautiful workmanship inside, with a bright, airy passenger compartment that pays tribute to the past but stands firmly in the 21st century. Sure, those pleated tweed bucket seats and matching door panels have a vaguely '30s look, but settling in behind the wheel is a distinctly modern experience. The dash has been beautifully repainted to match the bodywork, with the custom tilt steering column finished to match and then topped with a trick wood-rimmed banjo-style wheel. Check out the beautiful vintage-looking Auto Meter gauges, the well-integrated A/C system, and the Lokar shifter that looks like the original, complete with a black knob. There's a hidden AM/FM/CD stereo system so the dash stays uncluttered and the A/C controls are in the glove box. Simple is usually better, and the trunk offers matching tweed upholstery, simple side panels, and plenty of storage space for long trips.Reliable, smooth performance is what you'd expect from a rod that looks like this, and the 393 cubic inch Windsor stroker motor under the hood delivers big time. Built by Keith Craft Racing, it's fitted with a Demon 4-barrel carburetor on an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, and a Barry Grant fuel system keeps it fed. A recessed firewall painted to match the body is a super clean look, and service access is still excellent. There's a big aluminum radiator up front, the plumbing and wiring is hidden as much as possible, and it's really nice to see a Ford in a Ford for a change. Underneath, you get a Mustang II suspension with rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission behind the engine. A custom dual exhaust system with X-pipe sounds spectacular and the stance is just about perfect. 17-inch Torque Thrust wheels look great and carry 225/50/17 front and 275/50/17 rear performance rubber.Documented with build receipts and photos, this '38 Ford isn't about making a scene, but you'll probably discover that it draws a crowd better than just about anything else.
