Description

The Envoy XL was the model with the 3rd row seats that folded down in the back. They are actually not bad. the access it pretty good. and there’s a surprising amount of room there. I bought this car new back in 2002. My father in law owned a service station. so it had many years of good maintenance. However. he retired. and I ended up with a new car. so this car was demoted to “second car” status. and I keep it at the office. That’s not to say that oil hasn’t been changed. etc. . but it basically became a winter car or project truck. and fixing every little thing on the car wasn’t a priority. In the last 2 years. I don’t think I put 6000 miles on it. I put new brake discs and pads on it 2 years ago. a new battery and new tires on it January 2014. a new alternator. cleaned the throttle body. put on new spark plugs. and a new fuel filter on it a few months ago. It always seems to start. and always seems to get me where I want to go. Cosmetically. it’s seen better days; there is rust on the rear tailgate. and the grille/fascia got cracked. and there are dings and scratches here and there. The driver's door trim is loose. and the Front passenger door is rubbing against the front quarter panel. but it opens and closes fine. On the interior. the door panels and dash are in great shape. no cracks. There are some stains on the carpeting and seats. but more than serviceable. They should clean up nicely. So. the big question is “what’s wrong with it”. It works. but I’d say my faith in the vehicle’s reliability has recently fallen in the past few months. and here’s why. I don’t know what is causing it. so I’ll explain what happens. I’ll be idling at a stop. or braking for a stop. and the engine will act like it’s dying. the RPMs sputter below idle (about 600 rpm). and the oil pressure falls (so if nothing else. the gauges work!). If I shut the car off and restart it. it goes away. I can’t tell you how long it does it. or how long it goes away for. but at this point. I’m not going to mess around with figuring it out. I drove it today with no problems. just a few errands. Of course. this isn’t all that is wrong with it. but everything else is pretty secondary. Here’s what I know doesn’t work. and any explanation I can give: 1. Cigarette lighter (I think the lighter itself is bad) 2. The rear view mirror fell off (there’s a small chunk of glass. the size of the little metal piece that is the mounting point for the mirror. that came off the windshield. but the rest of the window is fine) 3. The lid for the front armrest doesn’t always stay down 4. The armrest unit itself is a bit loose 5. The Air conditioning doesn’t work. but the fan blows on all speeds 6. The rear defroster doesn’t work (the mounting points for the wires on the rear glass broke off) 7. The button to open the rear glass is sticking; 90% of the time it doesn’t work. so you have to open the rear tailgate. and not the glass. 8. The muffler went. so I just put in a pipe. with no muffler. So let’s say it sounds like a sports truck. 9. The “Check engine light” is lit up. and I think it is because of the lack of a muffler as set forth above. but I can’t be sure. 10. The remote control fobs don’t work. but I think that’s because the batteries are dead. 11. One of the 3rd row seat side windows has a switch that is a bit dodgy. 12. The covers for the cigarette lighter-style power ports on the dash broke off. Don't know if the ports themselves work. Now. let’s talk about what does work. which is basically everything else: Power steering Power brakes with ABSCruise ControlIntermittent WipersRear wiperFront and rear window washer 4 speed auto Selectable 4wd (but I have left it in the “on demand” setting. but I’m pretty confident on this) Am/fm/CD/cassette tape Heater and front defrost Power mirrors All power windows Power locks Power driver’s seat So. I’m going to sum it up like this: It works. it’ll probably get you where you want to go. it’s great for the winter or projects. I never really abused the car. so I’m thinking that whatever is causing the sputtering issue can be fixed. but all that being said. right now. without a thorough going over by a mechanic. I wouldn’t give it to my kid for his/her car.
