Up for sale is a 1951 GMC Panel Truck that has a rich andcolorful history. The panel truck used to belong to the Oakland HellsAngels for moving motorcycles when Sonny Barger was president. He signedthe glove box and the truck comes with two of his signed books. Hunter Thompson in his 1965 boo*k Hells Angels A Strange and Terrible Saga*quotes a Time magazine article that reads “The Angels go onmotorcycle-stealing forays. [and] even have a panel truck with a specialramp for loading the stolen machines. ” Well. that panel truck was a 1951GMC and the truck comes with several photos taken at the beginning of therestoration after it was impounded by the Oakland police. then bought outof the impound auction. after which it was stored for nearly 20 years. The panel truck was confiscated in the 1970s. sat in the 80s and was boughtby a Napa restorer of vintage trucks and motorcycles in 1998. He is alifetime member of the San Francisco Motorcycle Club. He had Max Garcia. afamous hot rod restoration guy. do the paint and body work. The panel wasbead blasted. leaded and had an epoxy primer coat. The truck had an original bench seat on the left side. There was a rear endand an engine that was in the back when it was bought in 1998. The Napaowner then replaced the front fender. back fender and the door. A vacationer from San Diego saw it in front of the owner’s Napa Victorianhome. made him an offer. and had it shipped to San Diego. He drove itaround on Sundays and when his wife suggested he was not getting enough useout of it. he sold it to the present owner. The truck had two old seats. he driver’s and the passenger’s. and the entire space behind them wasempty. just dinged up steel from years serving first as a work truck. andlater in transporting motorcycles. Since the owner lived on Sunset Cliffs at Luscombs. he wanted to change theappearance by making the notorious panel truck more beach friendly. insideand out. The panels were painted by surfer and famous local artistextraordinare. Erik Almaas. who spent weeks studying sunsets. southswells. and pelican migration along the cliffs. The driver’s side paneldepicts the cliffs looking south from Luscombs towards Mexico. Thepassenger side panel is painted looking north at the O. B. pier. P. B. and LaJolla. The two back doors sport a serious pelican looking at the surf justbefore he dives for his prey. You may have seen Erik’s awesome murals on Tower 13 in Cardiff. and Bird’sSurf Shed on Morena Blvd. His Surf Shed murals have been featured on theHistory Channel’s American Pickers. How about the inside? The ceiling is installed with a painted durableacrylic canvas that sports blue sky and clouds. There are 100 LED starsthat light up with a switch and look spectacular at night time. Plushsynthetic turf is on the floor. Four old restored wooden fold up stadiumseats are bolted to the floor on the passenger side. The metal frames camefrom Atlanta Fulton County Stadium when it was rebuilt. The oak wood camefrom Baltimore Memorial stadium built in 1922. A couple of old baseballgloves sit on the arm rests. After American soldiers returned home from WW II. there was an explosion inTiki Culture and all things tropical. Southern California’s tiki culturefit right in with the beach and surfing. so the present owner paid homageto that laid back life style by going all tiki. The blue sky with the 100LED stars is tiki. So is the tiki straw on the inside panels. the bamboo. nd the imported fabric from Maui which covers the two front seats. thebaseball stadium seats the inside rear doors and the sun visors. To keepthe fabric clean and free of wear and tear. the fabric is covered in customupholstered heavy duty clear plastic. The guru of all things tiki. Cobain at Tikiland near the Sports Arena. elped to select cool tiki materials for the interior along with the tikimasks on the inside panels. This panel truck has the island vibe and makespeople smile and give the shaka sign as you cruise the beach. When you park the truck. people will whip out the i-phones. text photos totheir friends in cold climates or do those annoying selfies. They’re like. ’ve never seen a panel truck like this! You’ll hear shouts of duuude!. wesome! no way! You gotta get that in the O. B. parade!There’s a big Mahi Mahi on the wall that likes to listen to Martin Denny. rthur Lyman and Lex Baxter on the cool stereo as you cruise the beach. Nothing the matter with Marley and Slightly Stoopid either because it’s allgood at the beach. Get out the Dick Dale. the Astronauts. the Ventures. theTornadoes and Jon and the Nightriders. They all like cruisin’ in the oldschool panel. Most people have never seen a one ton 261 cubic inch. one barrel downdraftwith a long wheel base. The engine is all original. Most of those one tonpanels had duels. so this bad boy is truly rare. If you were to put in aHolly Economizer. you would increase the horse power. And to top that off. he panel has the original 4-speed on the floor with a granny lowtransmission. The engine is all original but. if you wanted to. you couldswap out a small V-8 283 that would fit right in there. If you want to wax nostalgic. go to Home Depot. get yourself some plywood. et out the skilsaw and drill and make yourself a custom ramp for yourHarley. Indian. or if you can find one. a 1928 Velocette. at that time. thefastest motorcycle in the world. Then. you can truly cruise in style withyour hog resting on the grass. under the sky. next to the baseball seats atthe beach.
