Description

1985 GMC K3500 Rare 4x4 clean K-30 small block Chevy K30 K-30
Here is my 1985 GMC K3500 (K30) Regular Cab 4x4. This is the real deal. I searched for over 2 years to find this truck. It was supposed to be my last truck, but with a new child I just have to face facts and realize I just don't have the time for a project truck.
The motor was swapped to a 400 in 2002. The story was the old man who owned it wanted more power but didn't want a big block. So he compromised and chose to swap in the 400. I have all the receipts for this, and even a log of the break in oil changes for the warranty. I have not seen another K30 with a 400 in it.
Drive as is or restore. The truck runs very strong and sounds great, especially after I had the stock quadrajet rebuilt, tuned and tested. At the time I also converted it to an electric choke, which works great and makes it real easy to start cold.
This truck starts right up and drives very nicely down the road. Has not been beat off road (hard to find a one ton that isn't), more evidence of this is based on the rare factory auto-locking hubs on the Dana 60. They should, however, be converted to manual locking hubs if you are doing hardcore wheeling though. Has the Corporate 14 bolt in the rear as you would expect.
Paint is in decent shape for being over 30 years old, some chips and scratches as you would expect. This one ton was used as a truck. Drivers side is especially good. Cleans up nice and should buff out even more with some effort. Passenger side has some wrinkles and creases but nothing major. Dent in tailgate. Still looks very presentable. Please see pics.
What I've done since I've owned it. (I'm embarrassed to say I've literally put MAYBE 250 miles on this truck since I bought it in January of 2014.) Comes with a big stack of receipts, see pics.
new ATF pan gasket, fresh ATF (old cork gasket replaced with new Fel-Pro)
pedal pad kit (all four)
fresh oil change with Delco filter (will include additional oil filters)
AC Delco cap and rotor
AC Delco spark plug wires,
AC Delco plugs
air filter
AC delco radiator cap
drivers side door seal
wire-wheeled floor pans and paint, eastwood rust encapsulator
new dome lamp assembly
both door strikers
both door lock rod pins
pass side exhuast manifold w/ gaskets (old one had crack)
valve cover gaskets pulled and refinished satin black, new Fel-Pro gaskets and hardware zinc plated
PCV valve and grommet
air cleaner pulled and refinished satin black
carb rebuild, converted hot air choke to electric (works awesome)
four new tires, Cooper Discoverer ST/MAXX Load Range E (look up reviews on this tire, did a lot of research on tires and these are one of the best all terrains you can get right now, people are getting 50K plus out of them) (Less than 200 miles on these tires, still brand new)
Dyna Beads, Off Road Pack 12 (continually balances the tires, look them up) large tires are notoriously hard to keep balanced. these will never wear or or need to be replaced for the life of the tire. Lots of research went into my decision to run these. These will help get the max life out of these tires)
converted from 16.5" wheels to 16" wheels (better selection for wheels, and tires)
What was done before I bought the truck:
leveling kit (front springs rebuilt and re-arched to match rear height)
trans pump seal, bushing, oil pump and filter (2005)
new heads (2004)
350 to 400 small block conversion (2002)
five cab light assemblies
floor mat
passenger fuel tank and sender
The bad:
Just like all these trucks, it has some rust in the usual spots. An old leaking door seal and cb antenna allowed moisture to accumulate in the cab. The drivers floor was very rusted, with a few small holes no larger than a quarter. They were smaller but when I was inspecting them I was making sure they were solid around it. There is a small hole in the drivers rocker. Also the outside of the both cab corners is starting to rust under the paint, see pics. The pass floor pan is pretty solid, no holes or bad cancer - was mostly surface rust.
I wire-wheeled the entire cab floor, getting rid of all paint and rust. Then painted with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, then primer and satin black paint. I wanted to stop the rust from getting worse while I planned on replacing the floor pan down the road (which didn't happen obviously, just don't have the room or time).
I was planning on doing the drivers floor pan, rocker, and both cab corners. Spray Line-X in the bottom of the cab and up to the belt line on the outside of the truck, hiding the cab corner work and negating the need for a repaint. Also Line-X in the bed and bed rails.
I am not hiding anything unlike most of the trucks of this vintage. No carpet is hiding rust and I haven't spray bombed the chassis black to hide anything. When you come look at the truck, you are more than welcome to pull up the vinyl floor mat and scope it out yourself. A few other issues that I know about:
Dash is cracked at speaker holes
Rip in the seat bench
body isn't perfect, paint isn't perfect
speedometer jumps around a bit
