A decade after setting the performance-car world on fire with the NSX. they again surprised enthusiasts everywhere with the S2000 roadster. The first Honda since the original S500/S600/S800 sportsters of the Sixties to offer an engine in front and the drive wheels in back. the S2000 was so named for its sports-car chassis and its two-liter engine. It was 180 degrees from anything else in Honda's lineup. and a much-needed boost to the company's image among enthusiasts who were disappointed with the aging. soon-to-be-axed Prelude and the watered-down Civic Si. Based on the SSM show car of 1995. which no one really expected to go into production. the S2000 was created to celebrate Honda's racing spirit on the company's 50th birthday. With its stiff chassis. excellent balance. high-revving twin-cam four. precise six-speed gearbox. back-to-basics interior and fresh lines. it gained cult status overnight. "Imagine if Formula One engineers built a sports car. Well. they did. and it's Honda's new S2000. Motor Trend wrote. Car and Driver in 2003 called the S2000 "the most intense open two-seater you can buy south of Ferrari prices. Its flick-quick reflexes and hummingbird metabolism earn a special place in every enthusiast's dream fleet. "The engine was the technical highlight: The F20C. an all-alloy 16-valve. 1. 97-cc DOHC VTEC inline-four. with 11:1 compression and 240 horsepower (at 8. 00 RPM!). used all of Honda's racing experience and design knowledge. (Changes made for its 2004 facelift increased driveability in the lower revs without altering the machine's fundamental character. ) The F20C was rated the highest horsepower-per-liter naturally aspirated mill for nearly a decade--almost 120 horsepower per liter. without a power adder. Those were V-6 numbers in the early part of the decade. Compare: a Subaru WRX of the period had 10 fewer horsepower from the same displacement. and was turbocharged. The aluminum F20C block was infused with a fiber-reinforced metal sleeve. while piston skirts were molybdenum disulfide-coated for reduced friction. The intake plenum was designed with minimal volume for quick engine response; the 14-pound flywheel used until 2003 helped as well. Honda's VTEC system. introduced in the '80s and perfected over time. was used on both the intake and exhaust cams; VTEC utilizes two separate lobe profiles per cam. and switches between cam profiles depending on power requirements. The F20C's front-mid-engined placement in the S2000's chassis (with the engine placed entirely behind the line of the front axle) gave it an ideal 50:50 weight distribution. That weight. despite significant use of aluminum. approached 2. 00 pounds at the curb--it was no Miata. But then. with a $30. 00 price tag to start. Honda wasn't taking aim at the Mazda's market. either. A stiff "high-X-bone" frame (the side sills tie into diagonal braces that connect directly to the front and rear suspension subframes) sports a fully independent "in-wheel" double-wishbone suspension with iron arms. Standard power locks and windows. electrically assisted steering (to decrease drag on the engine). staggered-width 16-inch wheels and tires (17-inch on later cars). four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. and integrated roll hoops were all part of the S2000 package. There are two distinct generations of S2000: the early AP1 models through 2003. and the AP2 models from 2004-'09. The AP1 generation was built at Honda's Takanezawa plant. alongside the Honda NSX and Honda Insight hybrid. It featured Honda's now-legendary F20C; a six-speed manual was the only gearbox available. For 2001. Honda added a digital clock and a better radio. as well as a wind deflector; for 2002. the top's plastic rear window was changed to glass. taillamps were revised. and suspension settings were altered (read: softened). The 2003 models were largely carryovers. Car and Driver pitched a 2003 Mosel S2000 against the Porsche Boxster. BMW Z4. Nissan 350Z convertible and turbo Audi TT soft-top with quattro. and it came first--despite not being the newest design in the fleet. "Everything about it is taut and athletic and purposeful. You don't get in; you put it on as you would your best-fitting jeans. There's plenty of room to move--well. any moves you'd make in the course of driving--but no room for wrinkles. You know how. when jeans fit. everything comes at the right places? The S2000 is like that. "Changes came for 2004. The AP2-generation offered a whole host of differences and upgrades as production moved to Honda's Suzuka plant. For the facelift. Honda elected to stroke the engine to 2. 57 cc. giving the new four an F22C1 designation. Power remained unchanged. though the peak was now down to 7. 00 RPM; torque increased by 9 pound-feet at 700 fewer RPM. Redline was now 8. 00 RPM. with the fuel cutoff at 8. 00. Honda also juggled ratios in its six-speed. shortening fifth and lengthening sixth. and replaced the brass synchronizers with carbon-fiber pieces. Seventeen-inch wheels and tires fronted a chassis that was re-tuned to reduce oversteer; suspension geometry was tweaked to improve stability in the bends. Beyond the wheels. new visual spiffs included new bumpers and light clusters front and rear. plus oval-tipped exhausts. For 2006. beyond some trim changes. a new drive-by-wire throttle system meant that the accelerator was no longer physically connected to the engine. (There were also changes to the intake manifold. fuel rail. cam sensor. MAP sensor. air pump and their associated brackets. ) With drive-by-wire came Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control. made optional in 2006 and standard by 2008. Four of the stereo's eight speakers were integrated into the roll hoops. For the hard-bitten crowd that thought the S2000 was too civilized. the 2008 CR (Club Racer) model offered stiffer shocks and springs. fatter anti-roll bars. quicker steering. sticky 17-inch Bridgestone Potenzas. a body kit featuring a very bling-looking wing attached to the trunk. special paint and wheels. Alcantara seating areas and more. Ditching the power top and adding an X-brace helped lose 90 pounds and gain much in stiffness; the changes were said to be good for two seconds off a lap around Honda's Tochigi test loop without touching the engine. Honda's reputation for building quality cars is well-founded. but even the S2000 wasn't immune to teething pains. More than two dozen service bulletins were issued over the course of the S2000's decade of life. many of which centered around items that Honda had little previous experience dealing with. including the longitudinally mounted transmission and the folding soft top. A complete list of service bulletins can be found at www. s2ki. com/s2000/forum/145-s2000-service-bulletins-tsb/. There were even a few recalls involving safety items like seat belts and reflective elements in the taillamp clusters. Judicious owners will have had most or all of these issues seen to; your Honda dealer can use your VIN to check whether the car you're looking at has been upgraded appropriately. and whether they're willing to tackle the issues gratis if they haven't. In the wake of the global financial crisis of late 2008. Honda suddenly got sensible. It pulled out of high-profile Formula One racing. for a start; it also stopped work on its NSX replacement. and. inevitably. killed off the S2000. with no replacement on the horizon. The notion of a sporting Honda of any stripe. in this country. lay dormant. They were rare when new: Boxsters. Z3s and Z4s all sold roughly triple what the S2000 did over its lifetime. and the S2000 never sold more than 10. 00 copies in the States in a given year. Just 66. 47 U. S. -spec cars sold over the S2000's decade of life. Today. a fraction of that number remain. and fewer still remain unmolested. The slide down the depreciation curve has largely stopped on older models. and though newer ones are still dropping. the curve seems not to be as steep as it is for its more common competition. With no faster/better replacement. the S2000 is a singular entity. and while it's slipped from the popular consciousness. there are still plenty around; enough people want them that prices won't ever be too low-ball. Because this was a $30. 00-plus car in the early part of the new millennium. responsible adults generally purchased them new. That said. plenty were leased and turned in at the end of term; the S2000 is popular with the Fast & Furious crowd. and all manner of unspeakable modifications may have been made to a particular vehicle several owners down the line. Keep in mind that unless you know (and trust) the people or shops that made the modifications. caveat emptor. (At the very least. a respectable adult owner will have kept the take-off pieces and will offer them with the car. )The two-seat convertible shopper was spoiled for choice at the turn of the millennium--Miata. Boxster. Z3. and even the Corvette convertible lived in the below-$40. 00 range. And so. why an S2000? The reasons are manifold: It's well above the Miata's league. as its pricing might indicate; arguably better balanced chassis than a six-cylinder Z3 despite roughly the same power and powertrain configuration; far more rare than a Boxster. (The Corvette is a different animal entirely. ) But there's also that intangible Honda quality: the idea that a sporting car with a history of cutting-edge engineering (remember that Honda's first cars were either roadsters or Formula 1 racers) could be so free of quirks and able to be used as a car on a daily basis. engaging its sporting qualities when called upon to do so. Blending Honda's sterling reliability (and low maintenance costs) with as pure a sports car as they dared build was an irresistible mix to many. BODYThe majority of the body issues we've heard about center around the folding top. Service bulletins have been issued for items such as: water dripping on your passenger. tearing issues. broken snaps. creaking top frames over rough roads. excessive wind noise. a rear plastic window that can become cloudy (not an issue in 2002-up cars with the glass backlite). and a tonneau cover that pinches the seat belts. All of these barring the last one received service bulletins; the tonneau issue forced a recall. We're told that unscrupulous owners/dealers might try to sell an S2000 without a tonneau. They're still available through Honda dealers. Make sure all the paint matches and the body openings are properly aligned. Also. VIN stickers appear on each door. as well as the hood and trunk lid. Make sure they match; it's a good indication that your example hasn't been in an accident or repainted. If a sticker is missing. ask why. Also. some taillamp clusters were recalled. as the reflectors can fade with time. INTERIORThe usual caveats apply: Make sure that the heater and air conditioning work. make sure that the cruise control works and disengages by pressing either the clutch or the brake. bring a favorite CD to make sure that the head unit works (and that all of the speakers. including the four in the hoops of the AP2-equipped later models. also work). and make sure that the factory jack and tow tools are stowed in the trunk floor. The power top should not operate with the parking brake off. under any circumstances. and that brake should be regularly lubricated. Check the floors; if the top was a leaker. surface rust could start to form. AP2 models feature scalloped door panels for a bit more interior room. All U. S. cars (save for the CR) received all-leather seats. while some S2000s sold in other countries received cloth-covered chairs. About the biggest thing to watch out for. beyond non-stock parts. will be the lower left bolster on the driver's seat; drivers slide over it to get in and out of the seat. and it may get more use than in other cars. ENGINEHonda's F20C (and F22C) four encouraged high-winding revving. and plenty of owners were happy to take advantage of these characteristics. We're going to assume that you're checking fluids to see that they're clear. not cloudy: this is a sign of a well-maintained car. AP1 engines are known to burn a bit of oil. but that's fairly standard for these. Early AP1 models (through 2002) had spark plugs with a poor washer design and which could actually back out of their holes over time; when loose enough. the plugs could blow out and strip the thread inserts in the aluminum cylinder head. This was the subject of a recall. but tightening the plugs down to 18 to 22 foot-pounds should be sufficient. On 2006 and '07 AP2 models. the air/fuel sensor can be damaged by moisture in the exhaust system during engine warmup; a service bulletin advised that the dealership could reprogram the computer to delay the sensor's heater operation when there is a probability of moisture in the engine. There was also a service bulletin for the serpentine belt tensioner. GEARBOXAll S2000s pack a six-speed manual gearbox; it is Honda's only six-speed car transmission that isn't a transaxle. and the ratios in fifth and sixth gear change slightly between the AP1 and AP2 generations. Pay close attention when you drive. as there have been a number of service bulletins regarding these. including (but not limited to): grinding while going into second. as well as the 2-3 and 3-2 shift. fourth-gear popout. and some difficulty shifting into both fifth and reverse. Additionally. there may be some clutch disc chatter. Each of these issues has been addressed with a service bulletin and a recommendation for repairs. which Honda should have performed; it'll be up to you (and. with luck. an honest seller) to judge whether these components have been sorted or not. (A copy of the VIN at your local Honda dealer's service department should call up what's been done and what's been ignored. ) Also. pull the magnetic drain plug on the differential and check it for metal shavings. BRAKES AND SUSPENSIONThe S2000 is said to be sensitive to correct alignment geometry; an alignment at a reputable shop would be a good investment. (Curbed wheels are one good indicator that an alignment may be needed. ) Spring rates and sway-bar diameters changed on a biennial basis. with six different combinations available. depending on model year. Consider: spring rates increased from 219 lb. /in. front and 291 lb. /in. rear in the introductory models to 280 and 294. respectively. in the runout 2008-'09s. Yet sway bar diameters. meanwhile. started thick. thinned out in the middle years. then chubbed up again toward the end of the S2000's life. (Interestingly. the hardcore CR special has smaller sway bars than the introductory 2000-'01 models. )Throughout its life. the S2000 had four-wheel disc brakes measuring 11. 8 inches in front and 11. 1 inches at the rear; both Honda and multiple aftermarket companies offer a variety of replacement rotors and pads.
