Description

DO NOT BID WITHOUT READING THE ENTIRE LISTING. THIS CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE.
I purchased this Boxster about 7 years ago. It was a decent car and I maintained it and fixed things as any problems arose. This vehicle has the matching hardtop and factory spoiler package (which consists of a different front bumper, side skirts, and special rear spoiler). Anyway, it was an extra car 'second car' that eventually became an extra third, then fourth.....etc vehicle, so I gave it to my brother to use as an extra car this past yearShortly, thereafter, one of thejoints on the soft top mechanism popped andI took the car back, bought the parts and spent hours fixing it - replacing the pulley, cable, jointand arms. Unfortunately, driving it back to his house, the engine began smoking, I heard some noises, and the engine simply died. I had it towed to the local mechanic who says it needs a new engine. This just happened recently. My brother doesn't have the funds for that and doesn't need an extra car badly enough to warrant spending them if he did - so I am listing it here for sale on his behalf.
Up until the engine issue, this has been a very reliable vehicle. Like I mentioned earlier, I would fix things that went wrong and I enjoyed working on the car myself. I took it on a number of several hundred mile trips without having problems. It drove nice, was fun to drive, and looked great with the rare factory spoiler package. I actually think it looks better with the hard top than the soft top.
Anyway, this is a used 100,000 plus mile car that is nowhere near perfect condition. The soft top is okay but has scrapes and wear. The soft top window is plastic and discolored somewhat and cracked on the side (but still useable). The front spoiler should be resprayed at the bottom and has an easily repairable crack at the bottom as well. The paint lookspretty good but the hood is not as shiny as it used to be and should be buffed or cleared or whatever you do to make it shinier. The car has some dings here and there. That being said, from a few feet away, it still really looks great. The drivers seat has wear including wear through on the side bolster. And, most importantly, IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE.
The pictures are all from about a year ago when I was going to list and sell it before my brother told me he wanted it. Everything is identical or at least substantially similar now, though the car is not currently cleaned up and detailed. For a 1998, it still looks good and with the spoilers and hardtop it has a nice unique upscale look - in my opinion.
Note that I am unsure of the exact miles - but I estimate them to be no more than around 110,000 or so. The car is at the mechanics so I can't just go outside my house and check. Also, the way it works in Maryland (for some stupid reason), I couldn't gift it directly to my brother but could gift it to my mom who then gifted it to my brother, hence the two recent title transfers. The person I bought it from told me he it only had one owner before him.
The only problem I can think of the car had that I didn't fix was a crack in the radiator expansion tank valve (the valve is plastic and goes through an opening in the trunk). It was a common problem that required a new tank/valve to be put in. I bought the parts from a dismantler and have them, but the leak was so small - there would be a few drops of fluid here and there - that I never spent the day it would have taken to do the job. The parts come with the vehicle and I think I paid a few hundred just for those.
So, you are buying this AS IS, with all of its good and bad things -including that it iscurrently not driveable as the engine will not start or run and I have been told by a mechanic that it needs a new engine. You can come look at it if you want - it is just sitting in the lot of the service station.
If you can somehow fix it or put a new engine in yourself or for a reasonable price (I have seen them here on eBay for under $2,000), this car may be a great deal for you.
It comes with the hardtop, which alone would sell for about $1,500 on eBay. The hardtop is in great condition - I would rate it a 9 out of 10. The hardtop even has the rear window defroster built in and the cable to attach it to the car.
The Porsche spoilers were installed by the Porsche dealer when the car was new. They show up with the TEQUIP code on the factory sticker and were almost $8,000. They are rare and I have seen the back trunk/spoiler combo alone sell on eBay for $2,000.
The car was loaded. I have posted a copy of the MSRP sticker shortly. This car was OVER $50,000 after the discounts - probably one of the most expensive 1998 Boxsters made. The factory options include:power seats, sports touring packagehi-fi sound packagecruise controlspecial Porsche wheelsremotekeyalarmonboard computersport gauges with aluminum facespaintedroll barspecial exhaust with tips in middle
Italsohas lots of carbon fiber including the center bridge, the door pieces, the shifter and more. It probably has a few thousand just in the carbon fiber parts - though some of them show some wear. I think I paid $500 just for the carbon fiber shifter when I put a newer one on.
This car was sold by the local Porsche dealer new and has always been a local vehicle to the best of my knowledge. There is a lot of paperwork that comes with the car, including the expensive(and large) Porsche workshopbook.
I only plan to list and sell this once, so do not bid if you are not serious and ready to pay immediately. If you are new to eBay or have less 25 positive feedbacks, you need to contact me before bidding. Understand what you are buying, and if you need to see it or check anything THEN MAKE SURE YOU DO THAT BEFORE BIDDING. Don't assume anything and then complain to me later - as you can ask anything you want before bidding and come examine it if you want to. That being said, keep in mind that this was MY car for six or so years and I drove it and maintained it and it was a good car -good enough that I gave it to my brother.
Unlike most eBay car sellers, this IS NOT a car with unknown provenance and completely unknown issues that was purchased at a shady auction and being 'flipped'. Again, this was my car and was taken care of. I wouldn't have spent the money on the soft top hardware and all of the time it took to fix that for my brother if we didn't care about the car and take care of things. I wouldn't have spend hundreds on the carbon fiber shifter if I didn't care about the car and take care of it. You get the picture. I don't know why the engine went up - but, unfortunately, it did -and now it needs a new one. That means it also now needs a new owner.
You will need to come get it - have it towed - or whatever it takes to get it to you. It is currently at the local mechanic's service station in Reisterstown Maryland zip 21136. If you cannot get it within a week after the end of the auction, you need to let me know AHEAD OF TIME so I can make sure the mechanic is fine with it staying there longer.
Please note that there is local interest in purchasing the vehicle. If that happens, I will end the auction. So, don't wait until the last minute to bid as it may sell before the end for less than what you would have bid! Feel free to contact me with any offers and I can do a buy it now, but keep in mind that I know I can list and sell the hard top, the spoilers, the carbon fiber parts, and I few other parts for $3,000 plus fairly easily.
Finally, you will need to send a $1,000 deposit via paypal within 24 hours after bidding and pay the remainder via cash or certified funds. If you want to pay some other way you need to contact me for approval ahead of time. I have the clean and clear title in hand and ready, but if you don't pay in cash or in a way in which the funds are satisfactorily guaranteed, you are not going to get car or the title until the funds are cleared.
