Riding in the new Mercedes-Benz S600 is a lot like staying in a plush European hotel. Everything--from the quality of marble in the bathrooms to the weight of the damask curtains--has to measure up. The S600. is the German automaker's flagship. It is also as luxurious a car as you might ever drive. but in a nuanced and unostentatious way. For a base price of $114. 00 the car should be nothing short of splendid. For example. Nappa leather on the seats and center console is superbly rich. glove-soft. and stitched together with expert skill. Likewise. the arc of fine-grain maple that stretches between the "ten" and "two" positions on the steering wheel (the rest of the wheel is wrapped in even more leather) glows like real wood. not the plasticized stuff seen in most luxury sedans. Even functional features are tastefully rendered; at night. every switch. knob and dial in the cabin lightly glows amber so you can see them. but your eyes aren't made tired by a garish light show. The front seats breathe. Yes. the lumbar areas literally move in and out. which Mercedes claims is an action to prevent back fatigue. They're also vented (as are both left and right rear seats) with A/C ports that cool your derriere and spine. The same seats are also heated. and the driver can adjust his throne in 14 other ways. one of which is to shorten or lengthen the entire bench for optimal support no matter his thigh length. Back seat passengers are treated nearly as well. Their seats are fully adjustable; they get more than a yard of leg room. full climate controls. a pair of ceiling-mounted pop-down vanity mirrors. full sunshades. plus a pair of door-mounted ashtrays. each of which features its own lighter. Now that everyone's comfortable (how could you not be?). get ready for takeoff. With 492 horsepower. you might think the mammoth. 5. 8-liter V-12 engine would growl on startup. but it's actually so quiet you have to watch the tach to make sure the car has started. Underway. however. there's plenty of roar. The 4. 00-pound car can hop to 60 mph in 4. 8 seconds. and top speed is a governed 155 mph. A sophisticated traction-control system (which uses both brake and throttle modulation) keeps wheel spin to a minimum. even when you're really tossing the big Benz around. At 100 mph the V-12 isn't even breaking a sweat. and because the cabin noise is so dampened. a conversation at this speed is easily audible. When the car has achieved a level cruising speed. the engine can shut down half its cylinders. effectively reducing fuel use by 20% and decreasing wear. With all that power. the S600 had to be actively sprung to counter dive and roll. which is the function of the Airmatic suspension system--compressed-air chambers respond to load and vary spring rates to maintain a constant ride height. In addition. the shocks are electro-hydraulically stiffened or softened in response to driving and road conditions. In practice the S600 drives like the large sedan that it is: firm but not stiff. Cornering is nearly always composed. and it takes some time to realize just how much the car's 17-inch. 55-series tires afford grip. Stopping power is also eye-poppingly impressive. You buy this car to be driven or drive on stately. wide parkways and highways in fast style. And what style! Even the audio. phone and navigation controls can be programmed to respond to voice commands and will recognize the tone of several different drivers' voices. When you get out of the S600 and swing the door shut. you'll notice that it doesn't slam. It's grabbed instead by a pneumatic motor that carries the door the last few millimeters until it imperceptibly clicks flush. What this has to do with purchasin the S600 is everything. If such attention to detail matters to you. you'll be disappointed by any coach less perfect. Do you need perfection? Well. considering how hard it is to achieve personally. having it in your driveway is certainly a nice consolation. This particular s600 is in EXCELLENT shape. Just look at the pictures and judge for yourself. The vehicle is mechanically sound and the interior looks nice. The engine sounds great. it handles and drives superbly and has no problem developing high speeds. Car runs straight as an arrow and tires do not pull in any direction.
