Although the Maxwell name is relatively unknown to many American car enthusiasts. this was not always the case. Founded in 1904 under the name Maxwell-Briscoe Company. it soon became one of the three largest car manufactures in the United States; selling just over 60. 00 units in 1914. After an unfortunate fire in their original Tarrytown factory. Maxwell decided to create and relocate into the world’s largest automobile factory during its era. Given the name the Indianapolis Foundry it continued to serve the automobile industry. under Chrysler. until the factory was demolished in 2004. Maxwell’s American legacy continued to be earned on the endurance racetracks. They entered two models in to the 500 miles of Indianapolis and 301 miles of Corona. often placing ahead Mercedes Benz. Duesenberg. and Peugeot. Even though the company enjoyed early success. the post WWI depression forced new ownership by Walter Chrysler in 1925. Who then ended the Maxwell name. This Maxwell is believed to be the only existing 1914 Model 35-4 Roadster in the world today. The history of this Maxwell is well-documented with its’ first log in 1985. Beginning in Bill Harrah’s famous car collection in Reno; where it was displayed and maintained until 1985. A gentleman named Mr. Henry Bulley then purchased and performed a minor restoration on the car. One year later the car was sold to Dr. Michael Boyd of Visalia. California who had it professionally restored. Dr. Boyd then sold the Maxwell in 1992 to Mr. Richard Russell in Santa Barbara. California. Under the new ownership this Maxwell took first place in Santa Barbara’s Concourse D’Elegance. The last personal owner was in 2000 to Mr. William Brooks. who had a minor restoration performed and had the car mechanically sound and road worthy. once again. Finally Mr. Brooks sold the Maxwell to the Bank of Kirksville in Kirksville Missouri. With such diligent stewards of the car. it’s in excellent condition given its age and original building materials. The current paint scheme is in great shape and appears to been performed quite a while ago. it however. is not the original paint. The paint does show signs age with minor checking and scratches. but still shows very well. Minor scratches and chips on both door tops and the battery box on the passenger’s running board. which is nothing abnormal for a pre-war car. The convertible vinyl top is in very good overall condition it fits extremely well on the original mounting brackets. Two leather straps connected to the front help anchor the top down and gives the car a period correct look. All of the exterior lights functions as they should and are in good condition. with spare original front headlight lenses too. The wooden firewall shows no signs of its age and has kept its strength without any rot. Inside the single black leather chesterfield bench seat is in wonderful condition with minor wear showing. Still retaining all of the original driver aids. the wooden steering-wheel still as a functioning throttle control. advance. and retard; the amp meter and speedometer are still fully operational and original. It is road worthy although; it is a 1914 car so it’s always an adventure. The inline 4 cylinder engine runs and starts exceptionally well and the mechanical brakes work well too. This car is truly a living dinosaur in today’s robot world. What are you waiting for? This is your chance to drive a piece of history with over a hundred years of use. GET OUT AND DRIVE!
