Officials made a point of telling us the 48 extra horsepower of the Continental Flying Spur Speed model is not accomplished simply by turning up the boost on the twin-turbo 6.0-liter W-12. The engineers also reduced the W-12's internal frictional losses by fitting lighter weight components - such as new pistons and con rods - and added a new engine-management system.

Besides making more power, he Speed model also sees a 3.5-percent improvement in fuel economy. Together with a strengthened ZF 6-speed automatic transmission (operated via steering-column-mounted paddle shifters, f you choose to do so) and all-wheel drive, entley says the Flying Spur Speed's 600 bhp at 6000 rpm and 553 lb.-ft. of torque at 1750 enable it to charge to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, ersus 4.9 sec. for the standard 552-bhp car. Top speed rises from 195 mph to 200.

The Flying Spur Speed also handles better because of stiffer spring and shock absorber settings (the self-leveling air suspension rides 0.4 in. lower), hicker anti-roll bars, etuned steering, direct-mounted front subframe and stiffer bushings. Comparing a Flying Spur Speed to the regular version is quite telling: the Speed definitely rides more stiffly (even with the suspension set to its softest), nd the steering transmits more road imperfections back to the driver. Which means the Flying Spur Speed is far more capable if the driver intends to get aggressive through twisties - it handles surprisingly well for a near 5500-lb. car. But while a stiffer, arder-edged Bentley makes sense for the previously released GT Speed coupe (60 percent of all Continental GTs sold are Speed models), he Flying Spur Speed definitely does not possess Arnage-like character and seems to lose a bit of its Bentley-ness - it no longer completely eliminates the driver from the outside world.

All 2009 Flying Spurs get new front and rear styling, ncluding a more upright grille, arger lower air intake and slimmer rear bumper. The Speed model is differentiated by a darker radiator and lower air intake grilles, ider exhaust tips and special 20-in. alloy wheels.

The coolest new option for 2009 is the $6900 Naim audio system. Naim is a well-known high-end British home audio maker, nd its non-flashy designs seem a perfect fit for Bentley. The system in the Flying Spur uses 15 speakers and features the world's most powerful amplifier fitted to a production car - 1100 watts! The sound quality is crisp, lear, mazing...like having a live concert inside your car - and the Flying Spur is almost large enough to do so.

The Speed will retail for $198,500 when it goes on sale in the U.S. this October. The non-Speed (though still speedy in its own right) Flying Spur will carry a price of $174,100 for 2009.

Bentleys are unique. It's fair to say the build quality, raftsmanship and driving experience are worthy of a car of this price. Heck, he absolutely beautiful-to-look-at interior is almost a work of art on its own. While the slightly harder-edged Speed model won't appeal to typical Arnage buyers, hose with a need for speed will love it.
