Description

1970 Plymouth Superbird "BARNFIND"
This is a running, driving, fully documented, numbers matching icon of American Muscle.

This 1970 Plymouth Superbird 440CI 4bbl automatic car was purchased in East Rochester NY in 1971 and was owned by the original owner up until early June 2016. Al Vespucci (Former Vice-President of the Hemi Owners association), and many other local Rochester car guys have known about this car for years and can verify its ownership history. It was last registered by its original owner in 1986. It was parked in his garage and left there until the fall of 1990 when he brought it to a local East Rochester auto repair shop in order to have it inspected with the intention of registering the car and putting it back on the road. An oil change sticker from that service is located in the upper left-hand corner of the windshield. The sticker is dated Christmas Eve 1990, with the next oil change recommended for 46643 miles. With the standard interval for oil changes at the time being 3 months or 3000 miles, this puts the mileage on the car on 9-24-1990 at 43643. The car was returned to the owners garage and had not seen the light of day until it was sold in early June 2016. Today the car has just over 43650 miles.
This Superbird has just over 43K original miles and retains the original numbers matching 440CI 375HP Super Commando motor, 727 Torqueflight transmission, 3:55 sure grip rear end that this car rolled off the assembly line with.
One of the ORIGINAL BUILD/BROADCAST SHEETS was found under the rear seat. The original DATA PLATE is under the hood.
I am told that there is likely another build sheet under the dash. The new owner can search for it after the sale.
The gas tank was drained, and cleaned. The fuel lines were blown out, and an additional fuel filter was added temporarily to ensure nothing was sucked into the motor. An Edelbrock carb was installed to get the motor running The original carburetor is included in the sale. The cylinders were all oiled and the engine oil was changed prior to starting. The motor fired right up, and it runs and idles without issue. The motor was allowed to come to operating temperature to ensure the cooling system was operational. All other fluids have been topped off. The motor oil was changed a second time to remove any lingering contaminants. The engine compartment was cleaned but remains as found. The transmission shifts perfectly, and the motor runs great Everything on the car still operates as expected except the horn. Gauges, radio, wipers, head lights all operate normally.
I have driven this car to a few local car shows, but aproper tune-up, as well as an inspection of all critical systems, should be performed.
This car is 99.9% originaland complete and would be anexcellent restoration candidate, or it can be left as is driven and enjoyed without issue.
The car retains its original quarter panels as evidence by the serial numbers under the trunk molding. The same serial number is on the core support. The floors, fenders, hood, wing, and roof are all original and rust free. The bottom of the car is very solid but there is some rust on the lower quarter panels and trunk floor. Typical of unrestored cars in this area. Both jacks and the original spare are in the trunk.
