The Porsche 356 is. without a doubt. one of the most desirable classic sports cars on the planet. Especially the earliest cars. the "pre-A" and "A" Coupes have become highly cherished collectibles. virtually all of 'em tucked away in collectors' garages. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Successor to the coveted Porsche 356A. the 1960 356B T5 Coupe shares its curvaceous. small-windowed body with its earlier sibling. receiving different bumpers and higher-mounted headlights. Remove those bumpers and you'll be hard pressed to tell a B-T5 apart from its predecessor! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Bumpers? Who needs bumpers on an outlaw? Equipped with nerf bars. the Outlaw follows Professor Porsche's minimalist philosophy that less can be more. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Wagen No *112377* was hand-built by old-world craftsmen at the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen late in 1959. It's been a California resident since early 1960. received its current California black license plates in 1963. and proudly has worn 'em ever since! Yes. this Porsche is a daily driver. We've taken it on a 200-mile round trip to a big car show and it's a hoot to drive! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Outlaw's long-time owner. Walter Klemm. was well known in the SoCal Porsche scene. Not only did he meticulously preserve all of the past registrations. but he also kept a meticulous log book in which every incident. every oil change. service and observation was entered. It puts the Spaceship Enterprise's log book to shame! When the first book was full. he started book number two. Not often. if ever. have we seen such a detailed history. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The Outlaw's trunk shows the big fuel tank with the Panzer-sized gas cap; just like the 356A. the fuel filler on the early B remained concealed below the trunk lid. There's a box with some goodies and if you look at the spare wheel. you'll realize this car must have . . . disc brakes! Yeah. baby! Four-wheel disc brakes. We've left the undercarriage au naturel. aged to perfection. as only time can create. Yes. there's some corrosion. but nothing outrageous. Though obviously exposed to the elements. ridden hard. and put away wet more than once. the car still features straight coachwork with good gaps. Doors and deck lid fit quite nicely. There's been a repair to the nose with some body filler present. but it's still the factory original sheet metal. Corrosion is limited to the usual bubbling on the lower outside door skins. other than that. it's a no-worries body in a my car is my castle kind of way. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Originally. the Outlaw was born with a metallic silver coat. Many moons ago. it was painted white. The finish is worn and faded. has plenty of imperfections. but it really looks bitchin'. nonetheless. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Headliner appears to be the original one. dating back 55 years. Pretty. pretty good! Dome lights work. driver's side sun visor is mounted. the passenger side on in the box o' spares. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Stock dash. old carpeting. Even the genuine Porsche rubber floor mats are still in place. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) All of the original gauges. switches. and control lamps work as they should. save for the tach. We'll look into that. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Factory red leatherette seats still wear their original horsehair padding and seat covers. Passenger seat looks splendid but the driver seat's condition suggested adding a little brightness with a beach-themed cover. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Above. from left to right: Original door cover. a thing of beauty Original driver seat bottom. repaired NASCAR style Original silvermetallic paint in glovebox. just awesome Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Rear seats look almost too good. but. yes. they are original as well. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Outlaw comes with this cool luggage rack. ready for that vacation trip up Pacific Coast Highway. or down the coast to Ensenada. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Motorvation comes from a correct 60-horse B "Normal" engine. We haven't seen the KARDEX. but have no reason to believe it's not the original one. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Wednesday. February 11 turned out to be a super nice "winter" day here in olde mission town San Buenaventura. Blue skies and temperatures of 82 degrees at noon provided the perfect environment for our "official" test drive and photo session. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Driving this unusual Porsche will really elevate your heartbeat! The car starts easily. without huffing and puffing. Throttle response is crisp. the engine sounding great as it revs to redline. abundant power signaling a thoroughly healthy state of affairs. Aside from a slightly noisy throw-out bearing. the car idles. runs. drives. shifts. handles and brakes very good. indeed. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Quite exciting are the reactions of other motorists and the comments of innocent bystanders. Not surprisingly. at a time when every student is lured into buying or leasing the lastest offering from Asia. blowing them off the road with a Porsche that's older than their parents is soo much fun! It seems that the younger generation has lost the connection to machines that don't have a touch-screen monitor. which is sad. very sad indeed. as it deprives them from experiencing something that their rolling computers can't possibly provide. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) If you dare to be different and like to become the proud caretaker of a legendary Porsche 356. yet have to work for a living. the Outlaw is a candidate worthy of your consideration. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) You can drive it the way it is. and improve it step by step. perhaps during the winter months. Or. you could just leave it alone and answer questions of when you'll restore it with "Never! I'm letting it age like a bottle of fine wine!"
