Description

1960 VW Double Door PanelI have decided to sell my beloved little ray of sunshine and let the next owner enjoy it. Note: If you are shy. not prone to easy conversation or do not like being the center of attention this bus is not for you. If you do love attention and have no problem talking to every person in the beach parking lot or at the grocery store. 7-11. Starbucks or wherever. then read on. Oh. and you need to have a fully functioning left hand to wave back at every kid between the ages of 5-19. And yes. 5-year-olds do recognize the coolness of looking like you just drove out of a Disney animated cartoon. Teenagers? Trust me. despite being uncool to look like you're happy. they cannot help themselves and will give you the slight head nod. smile or small wave. I paid a fair amount of moola for this bus some years ago. It was outfitted with an expensive airbag suspension and had a mega stereo blasting tunes through speakers once commented upon as "dude. those are some gnarly a$$ cans. " Well. the airbags had to go and I stopped listening to loud rock about the time that Keith Richards smoked up his father's ashes in a joint. Really. he did that. FOR THE NEW OWNER LOW AND COOL. This bus sits on JerFab dropped spindles up front. Out back is a swing axle from a later model bug. Nice American Eagle mags wrapped in brand new Falken radials. 195 50 R15's up front with 195 60 R15's in the rear. Its stance is perfectly balanced. RIDES SMOOTH AS SILK. with a its rebuilt front suspension which includes new shocks. heavy duty sway bar. new tie rods and steering arm. AND IT STOPS WITHOUT FUSS. with an updated new German dual master cylinder delivering the fluid. via new steel brake lines. to new German wheel cylinders expanding the new shoes in the new drums. FUEL. resides in a new fuel tank sitting on a new body seal with new filter and sender courtesy of Wolfsburg West. Opening the fuel door exposes the new correct fuel filler gasket and a new "vented" fuel cap (Beware of OG caps claiming to be vented) There is a new reserve-fuel tap lever installed that was standard in 1960. Fuel is fed into the engine with a new Bocar 34 PICT carb. WALKING AROUND THE PANEL. there is an abundance of OG glass. new correct side mirrors left and right (and yes they are different). new rubber door bumpers. correct door handles. new antenna (center mounted antenna is not functional) and a straight body. There is NO structural rust. The underbody pans are intact (double door had full panels underneath for strength). The M plate indicates that this panel was originally delivered to California in dove blue. There is no reason to believe that it ever left the state. THE INTERIOR. is pure 60's. Correct one-year-only radio (tombstone push buttons) professionally reworked to 12V along with 12V clock (although the clock face is a repro). The radio and clock alone are worth a bundle if you can find them in this condition. Has a front grab bar. knee bumper. nbsp;retractable shoulder belts. new correct year and fitting rubber floor mat. new rubber boot for the emergency brake handle. correct sized and placed radio speaker. and period correct fuel gauge (1960 only had a fuel reservoir). The gauge is for those. like me. who love to look at gauges! Also. the entire interior. including the doors. is clad with heating/cooling duct insulation. A fraction of the cost of the fancy stuff yet providing all the benefits of a quiet ride with solid sounding doors. sweet! FUNCTIONALITY. of the rear is by way of a Z-bed frame (from a baywindow) and new foam cushions cloaked in a brown vinyl with a snake skin pattern. Having the bench seat which folds into a bed is a great addition for lounging around at the beach with both side doors open. The sides of the rear are covered with 1/8 " birch plywood panels. as was the standard for the campers. and stained a medium brown. Ceiling in rear cab is still waiting for a fabric. I have never been able to decide. ITS POWER. now upgraded to 12V. is generated from a brand new Interstate battery. secured by period correct battery strap. into a rebuilt starter which fires up a rebuilt 1600 DP single carb with a 009 dizzy. transmitted through a new clutch and throw out bearing to the rebuilt trans and fed into an Empi exhaust. It all sounds throaty without being loud. Is it fast. you ask? Hey McFly. if you want to whisk down the highway at 70 mph in this bus I'd advise you get life insurance - lots of life insurance. This bus is best piloted low and slow. although it is capable of keeping up with normal freeway traffic. It is simply for cruising along surface streets and down boulevards towards the beach - soaking in the stares and grins and waves. Of course if you drive a lot you need to apply a generous amount of wrinkle cream nightly to reduce the lines resulting from the constant goofy smile on your own face. WHAT ELSE ? Brand new DANSK heater boxes. levers and heating tubes. You can really get heat by turning the new heater knob and cable! Is it hot? Are you serious? Correct year California yellow plates (These plate letters would have been issued in 1960 since they begin with letter S). Unrestored in excellent original condition. The plate and sticker alone cost me over 400 dollars and will ONLY go to a California buyer. Out of state buyer will NOT get these plates. Clear title in hand and registered till July 2014. An original Hawaii dealer license plate frame that my brother snagged years ago while surfing on the big island. These frames are for sale for ridiculous prices these days. Perfect splash pan. Try finding one of these. New shifter coupler New forward trans mount New cradle mounts New late housing conversion on trans New clutch and accelerator cables Original bumpers with over riders Hella rear lenses All electrical systems work. including dome lamps in the cab and rear (which is operated by switch on steering column)OK. LET'S GET SERIOUSThis bus is 55-years-old and was designed and manufactured to transport stuff from here to there at slow speeds. They were not meant to go 65 mph. . especially considering that while driving you are the hood ornament. But VW addicts have done so much over the past 50 years to adapt any four wheel vehicle into something cool. This is such a vehicle. But it's not for everyone. I will assume that anyone who is contemplating this van knows full well the trials and tribulations of owning a 55-year-old VW bus. It is not a daily driver. unless you plan on tinkering with it all the time to make sure it is ready for the road. It's not unlike the pilot who checks everything in his plane before flying. Well you get the point. NOW FOR THE MONEY PART I want very much to exchange my bus for your money. I don't need your motorcycle. nbsp;motorhome. hot rod . rat rod. dune buggy. Star War figurines or rare first edition comic books as have already been offered. So please don't ask me if I want to trade. I don't want your stuff. I have too much stuff already. And please don't ask me for a scrapbook of pictures. It's just a VW bus and not a F-40 Ferrari. I will assume that if you are interested you are knowledgeable about buses and know what you are looking for. and what's out there. NOS and used parts costs. and what your budget can handle. I'm not looking to retire on this sale. The reserve is reasonable. but please don't ask me what it is. And there is no buy-it-now for anyone. If it hits the reserve it goes to the highest bidder at the end of the auction. Finally. please don't bid unless you are serious and have the funds readily available. And remember to check first with any other person whose voice you can hear in your head when you are about to hit the enter button with your bid. You know who I mean. As usual. there are no warranties implied or express with the sale of this vehicle. It is being sold as-is where-is. I will assist the buyer with shipping wherever possible. but it remains the sole responsibility of the buyer to make all arrangements. All funds must clear my bank before release of the vehicle and/or title. No exceptions. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
