Description

I purchased this rare production Mazdaspeed Miata in 2005 from the original owner when it had 3000 miles. It was in showroom condition at that time and I have meticulously maintained it in the same condition ever since. It came with a factory turbo rated at 178hp. It now has aprox. 250Hp in a car that only weighs 2500lbs. It is pleasure and hoot to drive.

HISTORY - The Mazdaspeed MX-5 was only built for two years and a mere 5,428 were produced. Only 1,428 were built in 2005 due to a fire at the factory making them even rarer. These were the only years that Mazda made a factory turbo version of their roadster. Mazda went all the way on this version, substituting 1000 parts compared to the regular car. Changes to the engine itself include reshaped pistons that drop the compression ratio from 10.0:1 to 9.5:1 and beefed-up connecting rods including a six-speed manual gearbox with shot-peened gears for maximum durability. The Bosch limited-slip differential also sends power to the wheels through larger, 25-mm diameter axle shafts.

PROFESSIONAL BUILD - I wanted to tap into the full potential of what Mazda had designed with the Mazdaspeed but I wanted it done right. The original factory turbo is small and cheaply built with the intake and exhaust being extremely restrictive. Additionally, the original suspension was only marginally better, allowing a vast opportunity to improve not only the handling, but the ride as well.

My objective was a reliable performance car with the absolute best quality upgraded parts installed by only the top professionals who specialized in these cars. Money would be no concern.

Therefore in 2010, I purchased the Mazdaspeed full FM II upgrade from Flyin’ Miata which includes a Garrett GT2560R Turbo.

Plus to handle the extra power their FM Clutch Flywheel Happy Meal.

To professionally install the kit I chose PR Motorsports in Hayward CA, owned and operated at that time by Rick Weldon. Rick is a former professional racer well known around the Mazda track racing community for building winning cars. His shop was highly suggested by Flyin’ Miata and he is also mentioned in Keith Tanner’s book “How to Build a High-Performance Mazda Miata MX-5.” His top mechanic, Jeremy Rine did the meticulous installation of parts. Cost was $2600.

All that extra power needed a full race suspension. Since I lived near the Bay Area, I contacted Fat Kat Motorsports in Red Wood City and spoke to the owner Shaikh (a well-known suspension guru). As an engineer and Miata circuit racer himself, he maintains a reputation for suspension setups that attain an unheard of balance between ride and handling. He took the time to assess what the car would need and personally installed the Fat Kat Bilstein Custom Coilover Package. Cost- $2100.

OTHER MAJOR ADD ONS -

949Racing Wheels (15x8 6UL) mounted on Toyo R888 tires- Cost-$1600

2nd Set of Wheels-Tires- (Konig Ultra Racing 16x7) mounted on Azenis. Cost- $1150

Hard Top painted to match. Cost-$2500

New (factory stock) Lotus Elise Seats - Cost-$800

Boss Frog Double Hoop Roll Bar- Cost-$530

MagnaFlow Exhaust – Cost- $500

TOTAL EXTRAS INVESTED - Over $18,000

The end result is a performance car that is an absolute dream to drive. All done by keeping the reliability of the factory stock engine and using only professionally installed performance bolt-ons. Complemented by a race suspension that not only handles incredibly but rides much more comfortably than stock.

Always adult driven and never tracked. It has zero scratches or dents anywhere. The interior literally still smells new. Always garaged and never driven in the rain. You will be hard pressed to find a lower mile, cleaner or more immaculate example anywhere. Especially with these professionally installed upgrades. Simply put, it is in pristine condition.
I have all receipts and records of maintenance including the original window sticker. Clear title in hand. Many smaller add-ons not mentioned.
I know the rarity, condition, quality and build of this car. Many of you know how hard it’s becoming to find these rare examples. Here’s your opportunity to own the unicorn of Mazdaspeed Miatas.
