Description

1971 Norton Commando… You probably already know that the Norton Commando was the super bike of it’s day and that when they were new people would take a stock bike to the track and win with these machines. There are plenty of place to learn more about the history and capabilities of these bikes so I will just tell you about this particular bike…

I have had this Commando for a few years. I have quite a lot to it since I got it. Here are a few things:

  • New Tires and tubes- new last summer and have had about 400 miles put on them. They are Dunlop Gold Seals with correct vintage tread pattern.

  • New reproduction Amal concentric carburetors. These are the premium type with the more wear resistant slides.

  • New stainless braded oil supply lines to the head.

  • Newly rebuilt Speedometer (currently reads 400ish miles on rebuild, ld odometer reading was around 30k)

  • New seat and seat pan

  • Newish paint (few chips here and there)

  • Engine was supposedly rebuilt by the previous owner. I see no reason to doubt it but I have no way to prove it either other than to say the compression is very good.

  • Lots of small misc. items like plugs, ables, tc.

When warmed up it will start just by pressing down on the kick start lever. Cold can take 2-3 kicks but still starts pretty easy. I had one of the last guys in the area who was a British bike mechanic when these bikes were new set up the timing, arbs, tc.

Negative things about the bike:

few chips here and there on the paint. I rode this bike, o that sort of thing happens. General areas of corrosion, xamples include light surface here and there on exposed steel parts such as the rear axle and bolt heads, tc. Some corrosion evident on wheel rims. It is an old British motorcycle so there is no telling what my explode on it next, ut I consider to be in good serviceable condition. I rode it to work today which is about 20 miles each way with no problem. It leaks oil… It looks like it is mostly from the transmission. I think it needs a new seal at the kick start lever. It probably has other leaks too. Nothing major as I remember, ut it does like to mark it’s territory.

Reason for sale:

Last few summer it got ridden pretty regularly. I pulled it out of storage this spring but I really haven’t ridden it much since I have three other bikes that havenew pistons thatI am running in, o the Norton has been sitting. I figured I will just free up some space and let someone else enjoy it.

I have a clear title in my name so no problem transferring the bike to it’s new owner.

I have had very good luck with this transport company if you need to have this or any other bike shipped. : http://www.dvtrans.com/
