A sale from the previous listing fell through due to the buyer's finances -- so here's your second chance on a unique Alfa Romeo! And this time we're listing it in a NO RESERVE auction, so don't let a high reserve keep you from checking it out. It's here to sell.
This is your opportunity to purchase a legendary Alfa Romeo GT Junior. Alfisti have watched Frank Smith drive this car to the top finish in its class at our National Convention time trials repeatedly – in 2010, 2012, 2015 and again just last month in Nashville. Improvements have enhanced the handling as can be attested by the outstanding success in AROC convention Time Trials. These were the only recent T/Ts entered and in most cases, Frank also beat many winners in faster classes. The car has also participated in many driving schools where he's instructed -- I've been hisstudentand he's terrific. There’s a photo here of the trophies that Frank has won with this car. He is moving on to another car, and this yellow beauty is ready for its next pilot.
Let me stress -- this GT Junior did not just participate at the Nashville Alfa Convention. This car drove round-trip, a total of 2,000 miles, from Baltimore there and back. I was cruising home in my '91 Spider when I saw Frank in my rearview mirror. It takes a lot of confidence to drive a 25 year-old semi-exotic car that far, let alone a 44 year-old one, and its next owner canrest assured, the car is ready to do that all again tomorrow. No excuses.
The Bertone coupes were always known for their classically beautiful design and excellent handling. The Junior versions, which had smaller engines and were entry-priced and decontented, were popular in Europe but rarely seen in the U.S. Frank purchased this 1972 GT Junior as a roller 20 years ago and immediately upgraded to a Weber-carbureted 2 liter. Since then, it has been slowly upgraded to improve the handling and reliability. It is all but impossible to find a Bertone coupe that has never had any rust; this car had only minor rust in the floorpans that Frank repaired early in his ownership to ensure the car's solidity, and rust has notreappeared there in 20 years.
After throwing a rod a few years ago at Summit Point, Frank got a used engine for the block and the pans and had a high end engine buildermake the current engine; the old block is now a trophy stand.
Modifications have been made for drivability and reliability with occasional track day performance enhancements without sacrificing daily driving comfort. This is not a concours car, but recent paint, upholstery, and dash make this a car you can be proud to take to a “Cars and Coffee.” Mileage shows as 57,203 but it is not actual mileage. All of the gauges work properly.
The newly upholstered rear seat back, good windshield, new vent window rubber, and the original steering wheel in pristine condition are included in the sale. A second set of wheels and tires is also included!
