In 1968, y Dad began a long term project buying a car he had always wanted, he Jaguar XK-120 Fixed head Coupe. He bought his first XK, hich I called The Green One, ept. 1968, hen bought the driving 1952 model (The White One) in 1971. The first had too much rust damageand parts swapsthat could not be corrected at the time as well as incorrect parts, o Dad bought the second and therefore the Green car could serve as a partial parts car.
XK-120's were popular in the 1960's because they looked great and they were a common sight at concourse races because they were powerful and stable. The dual overhead cam straight six 3.4L engine with dual SU's sounded (to me) like an airplane and it smelled like old leather and grease. Wonderful. I remember seeing the green one drive only once (into the garage for permanent storage), ut I'm sure Dad used it more than that. Dad got the white car into 'daily driver' shape about 1976, dded a cream paint job, hen drove the car to work regularly for 10 or so years. At the time we had a 1972 blue and white VW Bus and a 1965 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser (boy I wish I had that Olds now), ut the white one rested in the garage and the green one sat outside until we moved into a new house with two-car garage late 1976. Both cars have been garaged ever since.
Here are the essential facts: Green parts car has a WA "junkaffidavit". The engine originally installed at the factory was #W3906/8 (about Dec 1951). When Dad purchased it in 1968 a previous owner had that swapped out many parts: arts from a drop head coupe had been put on the green car. The White car (chassis #679033) has engine (installed at Coventry) #W3533-8 (Nov 1951) and this chassis is pretty early as the serial numbers start with production number 679001 making it the 32rd FHC to have been built for sale at Coventry. When Dad purchased it in 1971, he block was the original #W3533/8 and the head was #A7324-8 from a Mark VII. The engines in both cars were the 160 hp type, nd the cars are not the SE type. His pink slips shows the 1952 model year for the White one. Despite the fact that the straight engines were 160 hp, he design would allow the car to touch 120 mph on straight-aways, hich was no mean feat in the early 1950's for a car bearing bias ply tires.
Now between 1951 and 1954, nly 1730 left hand drive XK-120 FHC chassis were produced at the factory in England and most of the LHD cars were exported to the United States. These cars were rare in the northwest (Seattle area), o Dad waited several years before he could afford to get the second car and build a reliable running version. The first car has the original green paint and the rusty cowl was never messed with. The White one got the cream paint about 1974.
Over the years, ad bought new and old stock parts. All told, efore the project was put on infinite hold by a new, ifferent (and easier to deal with) sports car Mom could drive, ad bought thousands of dollars in parts so that he could have a reliable daily driver. He collected magazines and repair books. He saved nearly everything off the original cars. Nothing was thrown away, aving been put in cardboard boxes and stored on shelves, xcept perhaps a few old wires and maybe the original rubber, nd Dad took hundreds of pictures of these cars between 1968 and 1985 --- a few modern pictures are attached. Narratives were written in his handwriting with the intention that they could be put back together as the project slowly progressed.
These cars represent a 35-year stasis time warp. The entire project is now available for a serious investor and tinkerer to enjoy. The whitecar was last driven in 1997, henDad began an engine and interior repair that stalled. Everything in Dad's garage associated with these two Jaguars must be sold in its entirety. Sales of these family heirlooms will go through me and other family members.
If you are a serious individual, he cars are in the Seattle area and they can be visited, ut before you can go see them I will have to vet you. These cars can be put into storage until the right person with patience and desire comes along.
NON NEGOTIABLE TERMS OF SALE: These cars are being sold as-is and cannot be driven. No “representatives” of the actual buyer may visit these cars. You cannot buy these cars until you have viewed them and talked to my Dad, hich is at his request, ecause he alone knows the whole total of parts available to you. The price can be negotiated but payment MUST be in the form of a Personal check (which must clear his bank), aypal or cash. If you decide to lowball Dad, e will ask you to walk away. You could use your phone or tablet to make a Paypal payment right then and there and that would be acceptable.
Once payment has been made and cleared, ad will then sign over the slips to the purchaser. Nothing will be moved off-site until the full price has been deposited into our account or his bank. No partial payments, o loans, o cashiers checks. Ebay will get their appropriate cut. Once the payment has cleared true and full, ou must take the cars and all parts and accessories right then and there. Bring a van!
