Description |
---|
For your consideration is an outstanding 2012 BMW 335i Convertible, a beautiful car with minor body damage to the front and rear which can easily be repaired. The car, which has been greatly reduced in price because of the damage, comes loaded with over $11k in options and packages which are listed below. Some of the options include the exterior paint, (upgraded) Black Sapphire Metallic Paint, and a somewhat rare and attractive combination oyster/black interior. The hard-top convertible is one of the many incredible features of this car. This car purchased new had a stunning $11,275.00 in optional upgrades, including the "BMW Premium Package", Navigation System, Comfort Access Keyless Entry, Harmon Kardon Surround Sound System, Steptronic Transmission, and more (see below list for detailed options). This car is powered by a 3.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve inline turbocharged 300-horsepower 6-cylinder engine with BMW Twin Power Turbo technology. This specific model 335i (e93) is no longer made, production on it stopped in mid-2012. The 2012 BMW 335i made after July of 2012 is an overall less desirable car mostly due to the difficulty of adding aftermarket options, and a less popular body style. This BMW is one of the more desirable 335i models ever made due to the relative ease and low cost of upgrading some areas of the car (inter-cooler, exhaust, intake) to dramatically increase horsepower. The ease and relative low cost of doing this is not available on some of the newer models, and does not work as well on many of the older models. These cost effective upgrades easily take the car from an already powerful 300hp, to 420hp (and beyond if desired) for a reasonable amount of money. I had planned on eventually doing this myself but I simply didn't have the time.
Please scroll down for more information for the condition of the vehicle, the 90-day or 5,000 mile warranty being offered, and and the one-way airfare offer for potential out of town buyers.
CONDITION OF VEHICLE
I provided an honest and accurate assessment of the car in three areas (Mechanical/ Interior/ Exterior) which I will briefly explain here, and expand on further below. I would describe the car in the following ways:
1) MECHANICAL - The car, with 19k miles literally runs like new. The only mechanical damage which resulted from a low speed impact was minor and to the radiator, which was replaced. The 3.0 Liter Inline 6 twin-turbo engine is in excellent condition, and runs effortlessly and smoothly..
2) INTERIOR - A fairly easy determination. The only interior imperfection is the dashboard which was perforated on the passenger side when the airbag deployed. A new dashboard can be installed for not much money, if the new buyer decided they want a new dashboard (many people don't mind the fact the dash is perforated - see pictures). Also, there are 4 airbags which need to be replaced With a new dashboard, the interior looks like new.
3) EXTERIOR - The exterior of the car can be made to look as if nothing ever happened, if the body work (detailed below) is done professionally and with quality. I have only used BMW OEM parts for the body work on the car which has been repaired, and paid for the upgraded paint which came with the car (Metallic Sapphire Black).
HISTORY OF CAR, AND REASON FOR "SALVAGE" TITLE:
This was a one-owner car before I bought it. The car was purchased new by a woman in San Diego, California on March 28, 2012. This was not a lease car. Two years later in March of 2014, the car was serviced with 9,890 miles on it. The car was serviced again on September 8, 2015 - And this is where the story takes an unusual turn. The car was serviced at a BMW dealership on September 8, 2015, with 19,703 miles, and was in an accident the same day. The car has been driven a total of 2 miles in the last 15-plus months. A representative from Liberty Mutual Insurance told me the woman who owned the car picked it up from the dealership after the 20k mile service, pulled out of the parking lot and tail-ended another car at an intersection while not paying attention. Another car behind her couldn't stop in time and hit the back end of the car. All of this happened right in front of the dealership. Pretty funny. The good news? All of the work for the 20k mile service appointment was completed before the accident. While the story is a little amusing, the fact remains that the damage to both the front and rear of the vehicle is what I would again consider minor. Even though the damage could have been repaired without declaring the car a total loss, the owner requested that the car be purchased by the insurance company, as she did not want the car back. The reason she didn't want it back is due to the car being relatively new at the time of the accident, and the low mileage the car had. She bought another 335i convertible (2015 model as I understand) from the same dealership less than a week later. Yes, there are a several body parts which need to be repaired or have already been repaired. However, there is absolutely zero damage to the structure of the car (frame, undercarriage, etc.) There is no "hidden damage" as the accident was not serious enough to cause any. Any and all parts which will be needed for repair are again listed below.
This car is being of course being offered at a price well below the average price of a similar model and make. I test priced fourteen (14) 2012 BMW 335i Convertibles with similar options, similar miles and with clear titles (clear title meaning no damage history). The reason I could not test price the same type cars with salvage titles is because I only found two, and both had very extensive damage. The 14 cars I tested ranged from $28,200 to $35,495. The average (or median) price of all 14 cars came to $32,300.00, on December 5, 2016. This car is literally being offered for less than half of the 32k amount, of course because of the existing damage to the car. When reviewing the details of this car, there are two important items to consider. These two items are:
1) As of December 5, 2016, I have spent $4,049.06 in parts alone for the car. This does not include repairs. I am not factoring this number into the price I am asking for the car, I'll just write it off as a loss. I a, simply trying to recoup the amount which I paid for the car which was extremely reasonable. I had searched for almost 9 months before I found this car at the price I was comfortable with.
2) As mentioned below, I have detailed how much it would cost to repair the car. The amount it would take to repair the car using OEM parts from BMW is $4,355.30. This amount includes all the needed parts, labor, paint, etc., and is priced with OEM (manufacturer's) parts and assuming the body and service work is being done by a BMW dealership, or a body shop which is of the same caliber and quality.
DAMAGE TO THE CAR WHICH HAS BEEN REPAIRED:
With these two items considered, the car can be purchased and all repairs professionally completed for under $20,000.00 combined. If you purchase even some of the parts using aftermarket or pre-owned parts (found on eBay or elsewhere) you can save even more money. As mentioned above, the car has a "salvage" title issued by the State of California. The reason the car has this title designation is because of the above mentioned accident with what I would again describe as minor damage to the front and back of the car. Pictures of the car shown here were taken before any damage was fixed. I think most would agree about the exterior damage being "minor" compared to what they might expect from a car which was declared a "total loss". The following is a itemized breakdown of the all parts (both exterior and "under the hood" parts) which were repaired and/or replaced. All of the damage under the hood (which was mostly due to plastic pieces which broke) have been replaced with new parts, with the exception of the passenger side headlamp assembly parts. The car runs and drives perfectly now, and did just fine after the accident. The radiator (replaced with new one) was leaking fluid and the car could not be driven for more than a few minutes at a time. I should note the car was never allowed to overheat during this time. All parts listed below are the mechanical, and/or "under the hood" parts which were replaced:
This number accounts for more than half the value of the car. These repairs alone, if done by the dealer or any body shop which has to buy parts from the dealer will end up costing right around $4,355.30. If you are truly interested in this car, I ask that you verify these numbers, in fact I highly suggest it. This way you can know the numbers are as accurate as can be, and you can understand how much it will take to make the car like-new again.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON TITLE, AND SECURING FINANCING:
PLEASE NOTE - I personally have driven 4 different "salvage or rebuilt" title vehicles over the past 12 years, and I have not been disappointed. I won't change anytime soon, solely because of the savings involved. If you have done your homework so to speak, and know what you are looking for, these cars can frequently offer better quality than a similar car with a "regular" certificate of title. It is evident when looking at the pictures of this car prior to having any body work done, that the body damage the car sustained was not significant. There was no frame damage, no damage to the wheels, axles, etc. The doors open and close with no issues, there should not be any "gaps" in the hood or trunk, once the car is repaired and if the repairs are done correctly. The the hard-top convertible opens and closes flawlessly and without issue. A leak in the radiator (smaller in diameter than a pencil eraser) was the only damage which affected the operation of the car, causing it to overheat after five minutes. The radiator was easily replaced with a brand new one, and there are no longer any issues with overheating. There were absolutely NO corners cut when fixing this car, as I again was going to keep the car for myself. The 2012 model which replaced this body style in the last half of that year underwent some significant changes which were not well received. This is the reason why this body style (and those in some proceeding years) continue to be highly desirable and popular. This (early half of 2012 model) is the last of the e93 model 335i's which allows for the affordable and subtle upgrades adding 100 to 120 horsepower to an already powerful 300hp engine. This is a perfect opportunity to own a truly great car for over 15k less than other similar 335i's, most of which likely have higher mileage on a four year old car, and might not be in nearly as good of condition - all because of the title designation.
I have driven the car approximately 200 miles since having it repaired to make sure the car runs and operates flawlessly. I am selling this car with a 90-day warranty for one reason - because of the confidence I have in the performance and durability of this car. I will mention this again in this listing - PLEASE have financing in place before bidding on this car. Some banks may not be willing to finance the car unless certain conditions are met by the borrower. If you don't have financing in place, please make sure you have adequate funds (cash on hand) to pay for the car. I thank you greatly in advance for your understanding!
REPAIRED DAMAGE - MECHANICAL PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED - ALL PARTS REPLACED WITH BRAND NEW BMW OEM PARTS:
1) Radiator - (leaking) Replaced with new ($373.77)*
2) Radiator Fan Shroud (the large plastic piece which protects the radiator fan blade - cracked and missing small piece) - Replaced with new ($208.73)*
3) Radiator Fan Housing with Fan - (cracked in one spot) Replaced with New ($841.50)
4) Radiator Support (large plastic piece which holds the radiator, oil cooler, and inter-cooler - cracked in several places) - Replaced with new ($379.43)
5) Brace for Hood Catch - (Bent slightly) - Replaced with new ($49.43)
6) Thermostat - Not Damaged but somehow lost in transit - Replaced with New ($541.10)
7) Hood Seal from Engine compartment (small rubber piece located on top of bumper cover - accidentally thrown away) Replaced with new ($39.43)
8) Gas Pressurized Hood Spring (aka Hood Mounts). One was missing, so both were replaced with new ones ($44.61)
9) Air guidance - Top Front (slight tear in rubber piece) - ($80.06)
10) Air Intake Duct - (cracked in two places) - ($334.21)
11) Suction Hood- Front - (Cracked in three places) - ($76.91)
*These two items were literally the only items damaged which kept the car from operating "normally", a testament to the extremely minor mechanical damage.
EXTERIOR PARTS WHICH WERE REPAIRED AND/OR REPLACED:
Front Bumper Cover - The Front Bumper Cover was Replaced/Repainted with new OEM part. In addition to the bumper cover, there are five mesh pieces, two "kidney grilles", and two fog lights as part of the bumper cover. Only one mesh piece was damaged and had to be replaced. All other parts were undamaged, and were cleaned and re-applied to the bumper cover. The "kidney grilles" located between the headlights were not damaged, but were replaced with new $190.00 "BMW Matte Black" grilles which are much more attractive and desirable. I can provide the old grilles at no cost if you desire.
- The cost of the Front Bumper Cover (from BMW) was $723.68
- The cost of the "Metallic Sapphire Black" paint was: $372.10
- The Cost of the mesh piece was $44.10
TOTAL COST OF REPLACED AND REPAINTED FRONT BUMPER COVER: $1,139.88
DAMAGE TO CAR NOT YET REPAIRED - INTERIOR PARTS IN NEED OF REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT:
1) Dashboard of Vehicle - I found four on eBay which all fit this car. This is a part where it doesn't make any real sense to buy a new one. The "used" ones are all in excellent condition. The owner may or may not choose to replace, as the car will operate and function fine with the current one. I'm going to add the cost in simply because I want to account for all damage to the car. The average of the four dashboards which are the same color and will fit this car is: $319.00.
Airbags are also something you can save huge on and it doesn't matter if they are new or not. All that matters is that they have not deployed. There were 448 BMW airbags which will fit this car on eBay which I just checked.
2) Passenger Side Airbag - Upper (front, on top of dash) - Average price is: $110.00, with some priced much lower
3) Passenger Side Airbag Lower (under glove box, protects knee/lower leg area) - Average price is: $138.00, with some priced much lower
4) Drivers Side Airbag Upper - On Steering Wheel - Replaced with New - Average price is: $335.00, with a few priced lower. This is the most expensive of the four airbags.
Lower (under steering wheel, to protect knee/lower leg area) - Replaced with New = Average price is: $122.00, with some priced much lower
DAMAGE TO CAR NOT YET REPAIRED - EXTERIOR PARTS IN NEED OF REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT:
1) The Hood, also known as "Bonnet" needs to be replaced. The main reason I haven't replaced the hood is because many people prefer to replace perfectly good hood's with a carbon fiber hood (carbon fiber is twice as light and 2 to 3 times more expensive). I will let the new owner decide which hood they want as a replacement. The OEM part cost of a new unpainted (primer steel) hood from BMW is: $511.28.
2) Rear Bumper Cover - There are a number of Rear Bumper covers on eBay, some are painted and some are not. They range in price from $110.00 to $344.00. The part cost of an OEM Rear Bumper cover from BMW is $328.10
3) Impact Reinforcement Bar for Rear Bumper cover - This is the metal bar which absorbs low-speed impacts, located inside the bumper cover. I am not clear if this part needs to be replaced or not, but I'm assuming it does. This is another part where there are many listed on eBay (more than 50 last time I checked). The cost on eBay ranges from $62.00 to $178.00, most with free shipping. The part cost of an OEM Reinforcement Bar is: $218.20.
4) In addition to the Rear bumper Reinforcement Bar (#3), you will likely need the following two items: a "center guide" and a "right rear guide". The two OEM parts from BMW combined cost $38.10
5) The Right Rear (Passenger) Side Panel - This part was damaged (please see pictures) when the car was hit from behind. Many body shops will tell you the entire rear panel on this side does NOT need to be replaced, which is technically true. However, replacing the entire rear panel ensures the paint and body work will look flawless. The OEM part cost from BMW for the rear panel which is called "Rear Passenger Side Panel" is $538.92.
6) The right headlamp assembly needs to be replaced. The whole assembly is mostly undamaged, but it needs some parts to make it completely repaired. It is important to note that as seen in the pictures, the XENON lights work just fine and do not need to be replaced. The OEM cost for a new headlamp assembly without the XENON bulbs is $418.00.
TOTAL PARTS COST FOR UNREPAIRED DAMAGE TO THE CAR: $3,076.60
TOTAL COST FOR PAINT & LABOR FOR UNREPAIRED DAMAGE: $1,278.70
COMBINED TOTAL: $4,355.30
