Description

Summary:
Up for sale is a very well maintained and cared for 2001 e39 M5.

I've owned this car for about 6 years and bought it with approximately 70,000 miles on her. I'm a very active BMW enthusiast and have always used the best OEM BMW parts. I have all the service records and this car always received exactly what it needed to remaining running at peak condition. This is easily the best car I've ever owned. The e39 M5 is just an amazing vehicle; the perfect combination of sport, comfort, luxury and utility coupled with the timeless lines of the perfect sedan. The e39 M5 is also widely considered the last of the true "M" cars before they slapped the "M" logo on every model they make now. This is a car that you can comfortably drive to work or have a little fun with its amazing 400hp hand built motor.
Background:
I've always wanted an Alpine White M5. This color is very rare and desirable. After about a year of searching I found one in Wisconsin. I drove halfway across the country to pick it up. I bought it from another BMW enthusiast. The car did have a few issues when I bought it. It had a loud chatter coming from the transmission when the car sat at idle. I first replaced the cheaper aftermarket clutch and flywheel with OEM parts. This greatly improved the feeling of the clutch but didn't solve the problem. My mechanic diagnosed it as "backlash" in the transmission. We sourced an OEM transmission with 34k miles and it solved the issue.
At about 100k it developed a rough idle and threw and couple different misfire codes. We changed all 4 camshaft position sensors (CPS), O2 sensors, MAF sensor and checked for vacuum leaks. That didn't solve the issue so I sourced 2 VANOS solenoids from a M5 part-out with about 70k miles. The car ran like butter afterwards and all the codes went away. The car also had a loud knock in the front end. Replaced front control arm and bushing.
Notice on the pictures that this car doesn't even have the standard small issues like broken cup holds or pixel burn-out on the odometer display. This particular M5 is simply one of the best examples out there. Let alone the fact that it is actually running the best it has in the time I've owned it. Take this opportunity to acquire a truly prime example of BMW history.
