Description

This is a 2003 BMW 540i M-Sport. With only 108k miles (8k annually) it is the last year of the e39, and only 10-15% of 540s were M-Sport models. The 540i M-Sport is referred to as the younger brother of the M5. The 4.4 liter M-Sport V8 differs from the M5 4.9 liter V8 in overall horsepower (-50) and torque (-40), but both are capable of reaching 155 mph effortlessly.
The M-Sport generates 324 foot-pounds of torque @3,600 RPM (and 222 hp at this RPM). This is more potent than almost anything (except the M5 and AMG MBs). For instance, the 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage has only 302 ft-lbs and the 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S has only 295 foot-pounds. Torque is what accelerates a car, not horsepower. Horsepower only relates to top speed, and cars today are electronically limited for top speed so horsepower is irrelevant even if you could drive anywhere near top speed.
As awesome (and expensive ) a car the M5 is, it is far costlier to maintain than this 540i M-Sport with for example special parts and special weight oil required.
The standard 540i and 540i M-Sport differ much more. The M-Sport has a much tighter sports suspension, much tighter steering box, sports seats and interior (M accouterments- M steel door sills, M steering wheel, wide screen navigation), and most important a drive train tuned for far more low end torque. The M-Sport, like its big brother the M5 is similar to a muscle car from the 60s. It will burn rubber, but with the finesse, tightness and handling of a BMW.
The car for sale is nearly perfect and spent its entire life in S. California. The paint is glossy, no scratches or dents, and the interior is perfect. The premium sound system was one of the few upgrades ($1,800) on the M-Sport and this car has it. Another is the chrome BMW wheel upgrade, and they are in excellent condition. The tires are matching and 70%.
This car has a clean title, no record of any accidents or any adverse events, non-smoker, emissions tested and registered in California for 12 more months until December 2017.
A deposit of $1,000 is due 2 days after winning bid.
