This is an incredible low, low mileage M3 that runs as good as it looks. These very special cars are now collectibles and are appreciating in value yearly. The car runs and handles real tight as a low millage BMW M3 should. The paint is in great condition as is the super clean interior. With an all-new-for-’99 3 Series sedan already on sale here, one might wonder why BMW now offers an M3 Convertible. It’s a package that people have begged for since the current-generation M3 appeared in ’95.
Physically, this stylish newcomer is a 3 Series droptop fitted with an M3 powertrain, underpinnings, interior bits, and body modifications-all for a base price of $45,900.
As a twist, we elected to pair its killer 3.2-liter/240-horse DOHC six with BMW’s multimode, five-speed automatic transmission, one of the few M3 options. BMW estimates nearly 60 percent of the M3 Convertibles headed for America will pack this tranny.
The M3 Convertible’s well-engineered softtop features fully automatic one-touch operation. Press a button, and within 20 seconds the top unlatches, folds itself into the well behind the seats, and gets covered by a hard tonneau. In the event of a rollover, two roll hoops stowed behind the rear bench will instantly deploy. Although packaging requirements dictated a plastic rear window that precludes a rear defogger, this top remains one of the slickest bits of design work on the market at any price. Opting for the droptop M3 does exact a small drag penalty, with the Cd figure rising from 0.32 for the coupe to 0.36.
To counteract any loss of chassis stiffness, the M3 Convertible carries beefier longitudinal frame members and has supplemental front cross-bracing elements.
Our car did a 6.6-second 0-60-mph best and blitzed the quarter mile in 14.9 ticks at 94.9 mph.
Rating an M3 Convertible merely on these great hard numbers would be missing the point. It’s an open-air tourer in the grandest sense, with plenty of raw talent when it comes to carving through twisties. The minimal loss of structural rigidity does little to inhibit serious driving pleasure and, in alfresco mode, wind noise and buffeting remain well checked up to triple-digit speeds.
