The E46 is the sweet spot in the evolution of the BMW 3 series. It is the perfect balance between technological advancement. driving experience. luxury. and reliability. The 2005-model year is the best year and came equipped with the most standard options. The E46 is widely regarded as the last 3 series with proper BMW driving dynamics. finding a low mileage one is getting harder by the month. BMW’s are my specialty. I am a BMW Car Club of America performance-driving instructor and long time member. I own and maintain a fleet of BMW’s. I pick only the best cars for our inventory. You can buy and unknown quantity for cheaper and spend the money fixing it. or you can buy a known quantity that's been done. This is a 1-owner car that has been exceptionally well cared for. It is incredibly clean inside and out. The paint and trim are excellent. The front bumper. hood. and windshield are free of pitting. There are a few small scratches consistent with age and mileage. The interior is fantastic - no tears. rips. or smells. It has that Napa Leather smell that E46’s came with from the factory. All functions and accessories work correctly. with the exception of the power mirror adjustment. I installed BMW All-Weather floor mats to preserve it for years to come. I had the auto-dimming rearview mirror upgraded by an O. E. supplier to solid-state internals in lieu of the liquid internals that eventually leak and destroy the center console. The only imperfections I could find were small blemishes consistent with the mileage. one small door ding on the passenger side door and another on the roof. there is minor scratches and small curb rash on the wheels. the rear bumper cover was probably re-sprayed at some point (there slight overspray on the trim). and there is one small blemish on the rear deck lid. The dual VANOS unit offers infinitely variable timing to optimize both power and efficiency. It is also extremely reliable. I have seen examples of this engine go well beyond 300. 00 miles if properly maintained. Of course. if you are shopping for a BMW. you already know this. E46’s produced after the latter half of the 2003 model year were equipped with a more reliable 5 speed automatic transmission produced by GM (ironically). I have always been a manual fanatic. but added an E46 with an automatic gearbox to my personal fleet a few years ago. I have to confess that it makes negotiating Denver’s traffic downright civilized. It has a true manual mode. where it will hold a gear against the rev-limiter as long as you ask it to; a fantastic feature for climbing Colorado’s steep mountain passes. It will also automatically downshift under moderate braking. a fantastic feature for control and efficiency on the way down! I’ve always believed a car with good driving dynamics equipped with the right snow tires is more important in the snow and ice than just AWD. Adding AWD to the 50/50-balance of the BMW E46 3 series only increases driver confidence. The E46 all wheel drive system is mechanically simple. resulting in long lasting reliability. It uses a planetary gear-based system. not a haldex or torsen-based system found in VW and Audi or Subaru. It is simple. but highly effective. especially when combined with Dynamic Stability Control (which can be turned off). The power is split 38% front / 68% rear. preserving the rear wheel drive dynamics that define the BMW driving experience without compromising traction in adverse conditions.
