William L. "Bill" Mitchell was an automobile designer who was recruited by Harley Earl to join the Art and Colour Section of General Motors in 1935. Mitchell is responsible for creating or influencing the design of over 72.5 million automobiles produced by GM, ncluding such landmark vehicles as the 1949 Cadillac with its P38 influenced fins, he 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel-Air, he 1961-76 Corvette Stingray, nd his swan song, he 1980-1985 Cadillac Seville.
Since it was the last design of consequence that General Motors design chief Bill Mitchell oversaw, ayne Kady’s1980 Cadillac Seville is thought by some to be the ultimate expression of Mitchell’sdesign philosophy. No doubt Mitchell was a fan of what he called the “London look”, nd the ’80 Seville had that in spades: a classic vertical grille, bustle shaped rear end, raked C pillar and a long hood. When accused of borrowing the bustle-back from a contemporary Lincoln, itchell reportedly got indignant and said that he stole it from Rolls-Royce, ot the cross-town competition in Dearborn.
The second generation Seville made its debut in the fall of 1979 to great fanfare and controversy. Although there were decent production numbers for this body’s 6 year run, ery few were saved by collectors, ainly because of the popularity of the midsized coupes of this era. This is proving to have been a big oversight. On any given day you can find a nice low mile Eldorado of this generation, ut a pristine low mile Seville is very scarce. And Cadillac collectors have noticed, ith the demand for a nice second generation Seville more than doubling the price over the last five years.
This gorgeous low mile, ll original Seville was purchased recently by my 87 year old father, ho has always driven Cadillacs and lamented the sale of his series 2 Seville in the 1990s. Unfortunately though, fter recent triple bypass surgery, nd while he is in great overall health, e (we) decided his driving days are setting.
After scouring Hemmings, Bay, nd Craigslist, e found this car local. It was the pride and joy of a local personage who had two cars, his Seville and a Lincoln Towncar; the Seville was her go to Sunday church car. Dad acquired the car from her estate; he dealt with her nephew who as a professional mechanic, ad always taken care of her cars. This Seville has always been garaged, as always had a battery tender attached, as always been started regularly, nd has always been serviced regularly. One interesting detail, ook for the image of the door jamb service sticker that shows a 1991 oil change at 22xxx miles.
Freshly Serviced: After purchase, e took the car to my mechanic and had him do a comprehensive service:
· Replaced the master-brake cylinder.
· Brakeswere in tip-top shape but we did a complete brake fluid flush after replacing the master brake cylinder.
· New front shocks.
· New exhaust system from the exhaust pipe back, ncluding a new muffler and resonator.
· New OEM power antenna motor.
· New plugs and a general tune-up.
· New tires. The tires were like new but they were installed in 2009 and had developed a flat spot on one tire.
· Oil and filter change.
· Coolant was like new so we didn’t drain or flush.
· Belts and hoses were like new so we left them alone.
· Battery is good. Wiper blades are good. Every light works. All instruments work. Mileage computer works.
Mechanically, his car is ready to drive across the country. The AC works great, he climate control system works as new, he cruise control works as new, he optional radio/cassette player sounds great, ot a rattle or hum. However I noticed that when using the cassette, ne channel will go in and out. It might be that the head needs to be cleaned with a Q-Tip and alcohol. Or it could have been the included cassette of Patsy Cline; I don’t have another cassette to test.
Visually the car is like new. It is in spectacular condition. Not a door ding, cratch, he panels are laser straight; there has never been any body damage and there is zero rust or corrosion. All the light lenses are clear without fade. It is in as close to mint condition as you will ever find. I have seen newer cars with the same mileage that could not hold up to comparison; the car is in remarkable condition. Even the cigarette lighters have never been used. The car’s interior smells like a new car, he leather is spotless and supple. All the glass, ubber grommets, nd seals are like the day they left the factory. No scratches to the all original glass, ll the rubber bits are in fantastic shape.
The last thing to mention would be how visually, he car is a really beautiful color. The same can be said about the leather, hich comes very close to matching the exterior hue. I spent a lot of time looking up the paint codes and the paint code WA-8240 was called *WOODLAND HAZE METALLIC. The interior color I believe was called MEDIUM COGNAC. I decoded the RPO codes online from the Cadillac forum and the interior code corresponds to four different options. As two were for an Opel, hich is GM in Europe, nd one was for a Holden, M built in Australia; I deduced the MEDIUM COGNAC would be the correct color name for the US. Please see the entire list of the included GM RPO codes and notes that are at the end of this listing. You will see that there are some codes that show as “No Match”, did my best to find out what those codes corresponded to but in searching the Cadillac forum, ound other owners having the same issue so assume that without further investigation, e will have to accept that we tried.
A long listing, es. I tried to highlight each area of interest, o for those who aren’t as obsessive, ouldn’t have to wade thru the minutia. For those that enjoy the details, ell here you go! It is a really nice car that is worth spending the time on.
Price: Well I know we spent the dollars to acquire the best but Dad is open to reasonable offers. We went with the “Buy It Now” so either the car could be purchased outright, r we could field offers; the car needs to be sold.
*WOODLAND HAZE METALLIC: This color is not reflected in the "PRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR" RPO codes below. You will notice a few other colors listed that are obviously incorrect. I did an internet search and found the correct GM color name thru a company named Automotive Touchup. I bought one of their touchup pens and it is included. I will note that other than washing and toweling offthe car, e have not touched up the paint or spent any time detailing; a further testament to the cars incredibly original condition.1984 GM RPO CODES-CADILLAC SEVILLECODEDESCRIPTION Printed from http://www.cadillacfaq.com/rpoAG2DJUSTER PASS ST POWER, ULTI-DIRECTIONALAM6EAT FRT SPLIT BENCHAR6ESTRAINT SYSTEM SEAT BELT, HLDR HARN, ANA81ADJUSTER PASS ST BK POWER, ECLININGB34COVERING FRT FLOOR MATS, ARPETED INSERTB35COVERING REAR FLOOR MATS, ARPETED INSERTB36NG FLOOR MAT, UGG COMPTB93NTATION EXTR, LDG, R EDGE GUARDCA2ROOF COVERING VINYL - DELETEC49DEFOGGER RR WINDOW, LECTRICB68WOODENDC2MIRROR I/S R/V TILT, UAL READING LAMPS, OMPASS, /S TEMP DISPLAYD60OVERRIDE TRIM & PAINT COMPATIBILITYD64MIRROR I/S FRT VAN RH, UNSHADE, LLUMD74MIRROR I/S FRT VAN LH, UNSHADE, LLUMFK2ARM LH TORS BAR SPRING ADJ (A)F57No MatchK19REACTOR SYSTEM AIR INJECTIONK34E CONTROL AUTOMATIC, LECTRONICLINPLANT CODE LINDEN, J, SALT8No MatchL02No MatchMX0MERCHANDISED TRANS AUTO PROVISIONS, /DM57TRANSMISSION MAN 5 SPD, LARK, L3905, .08 1ST, 77 5TH, /DNA5EMISSION SYSTEM FEDERAL, IER 0NB1EMISSION SYSTEM CLOSED LOOPN37STEERING COLUMN TILT, ELESCOPINGN91COVER, HEEL SIMULATED WIRE, OCKQJWNo MatchT82AMPS CONTROL AUTOMATIC ON-OFFUM7RADIO AM/FM STEREO, EEK/SCAN, LOCK, TRUY9CLUSTER KILO & MILES, ECHANICAL DISPLAYU66SPEAKER SYSTEM 7, USTOMU75ANTENNA POWER, ADIOVK3LICENSE PLATE FRONT FRT MOUNTING PKGV4CNo MatchV51SE PLATE FRAME, RT & RRV73VEHICLE STATEMENT USA/CANADAYLTNo MatchYLONo MatchYL1No MatchYM4SSING ZONE OFFICE ORDERSYM5STRIPE ACCENT - DELETEYN6SSING STOCK SALESYT9PROGRAM EXPOSURE INITIATIVE I: C/F/G/H/J/K/M/N/S/U/V/W/Z- TRK CKGMPST 7 1 8Y36No Match6ZJCOMPONENT FRT LH COMPUTER SEL SUSP (6ZJ)60FNo Match60I*SEE BELOW60XTRIM COLOR SEAT COLOR BEIGE (OPEL)602No Match609No Match62L*SEE BELOW62U*SEE BELOW7ZJCOMPONENT FRT RH COMPUTER SEL SUSP (7ZJ)8KDCOMPONENT RR LH COMPUTER SEL SUSP (8KD)9KDCOMPONENT RR RH COMPUTER SEL SUSP (9KD)RPO Code*Explanation/Description60IINTERIOR TRIM MED COGNAC (91)60IINTERIOR TRIM NEUTRAL SHALE (97) OPEL60IINTERIOR TRIM CAPPUCCINO (01) OPEL60IINTERIOR TRIM LIGHT NEUTRAL (00) (HOLDEN)RPO Code*Explanation/Description62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, ARK SPIRAL GRAY MET (03)62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, T TERRA COTTA MET (95)62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, T TAUPE (96)62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, ODIN SILVER MET (BRAZIL)62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, K BLUE MT (00)62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, ILVER PLUM (00)62LSECONDARY COLOR EXTERIOR, IGHT IVORY, PEL(99)RPO Code*Explanation/Description62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, ARK SPIRAL GRAY MET (03)62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, K BLUE GREEN MICA (04)62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, K BLUE MET (01)62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, TING RED (02) HOLDENSRPO Code*Explanation/Description62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, ARK SPIRAL GRAY MET (03)62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, K BLUE GREEN MICA (04)62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, K BLUE MET (01)62UPRIMARY COLOR EXTERIOR, TING RED (02) HOLDENS
