When Neiman Marcus opened bidding for this featured item on October 15. 2002 the XLR sold out in 14 minutes. setting a record for any fantasy gift vehicle Neiman Marcus ever showcased in its annual Christmas Book. Originally unveiled at Pebble Beach in August 2002. this was Cadillacs second attempt at a luxury roadster to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz. BMW. and Jaguar. Unlike the ill-fated Allanté. there was no expensive transatlantic production line. nor was there an attempt to utilize a FWD chassis. No. this time it would be based on the evergreen Chevrolet Corvette. built at the Corvette facility in Bowling Green. with production costs shared between the two models. Of course. Neiman Marcus had to have a Cadillac Roadster in their Christmas Book. so a limited edition XLR was created. and was only available for purchase through the 2003 Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog.
