1999 was the year that the C5 Corvette got its first round of upgrades, ncluding a fresh pallet of colors. This great-looking Navy Blue 1999 Corvette convertible represents perhaps the most economical way to get into one of these fantastic plastic sports cars, nd yes, he legends are true.Having worked for a notable Corvette tuner hand-in-hand with GM during the C5's development, 'll be the first to tell you that these cars are virtually bulletproof and you should not let the mileage scare you away. It was our job to break them, nd quite honestly, e never could. So with that in mind, stock Corvette like this should last virtually forever, nd thanks to a careful owner who obviously loved his car, t looks like it has a fraction of the miles showing on the odometer. Navy Blue was new for 1999 and gave the C5 an upscale look, ut as a side-effect, t was also just as good at giving the Corvette an aggressive attitude, o this one looks flat-out awesome. High-stress areas like the chin and rocker panels are in decent shape with only modest wear. Fit and finish are typical C5; that is to say, t's excellent, nd the only deviation from stock is a set of fixed projector-style headlights that look to have been borrowed from the C5R racing car.Black leather is a nice complement to the Navy Blue paint, oftening the Corvette's roughneck image into that of a grand tourer. This one offers leather seats which show no issues with fading or dryness, oth of which you'd expect in an open-air car. The same holds true for the carpets and door panels, one of which look 17 years old, ore evidence of clean living with a guy who loved his Corvette. You'll love watching the gauges dance every time you slide behind the wheel, nd this one offers a lengthy list of options including dual-zone climate control, M/FM/CD stereo, nd all the power accessories you'd expect from Chevy's flagship. It has a matching black canvas top that's in fantastic condition and once you master the flip-and-stow procedure, ou'll be able to go from closed car to open-air cruising in seconds. And even with the top down, he C5 offers a good-sized trunk that's very usable, o hit the highway and use this sucker for road trips. The C5 was a game-changer under the hood, o question about it. The all-aluminum LS1 replaced the venerable small block, nd brought impressive levels of smoothness and performance to the table. Horsepower was still 345 in 1999, ut that doesn't adequately describe the smooth flow of torque or the ripping silk sound of this car and its polished exhaust tips. The transverse leaf spring suspension remained, ut was extensively upgraded in the C5, nd the rear-mounted 4-speed automatic transmission (which was standard equipment, ddly enough) helps improve weight distribution. Corvettes were always legendary for their brakes, nd it appears that the only upgrade is a set of custom multi-piece wheels that are expensive versions of the factory Z06 hoops, ccurate right down to the center caps. Right-sized 245/45/17 front and 275/40/18 rear performance radials are fitted as well, o it handles and tracks like it should.A great C5 ragtop at a bargain price, nd with their reputation for durability, his one is ready for another decade of fun.
