When I bought this car in 1992, guys were already cloning Super Sports from plain Jane Chevelles. In 1969, the VIN didn’t tell you if it was an SS or not, so guys would find a 396, deck the block and re-stamp the right side deck with the appropriate number to match their Chevelle. Then it was just a matter of finding an SS hood, door panels, badging, etc. – and you had a pretty good clone. So when I saw the matching number engine, I wasn’t immediately convinced that it was “real”. But, fortunately, this car was painted in one of two colors reserved by Chevrolet as special order paint – only available on Super Sports. This was Monaco Orange (aka Hugger Orange) and had the #72 paint code on the cowl tag to verify its authenticity. (The other special order color was Daytona Yellow, by the way). Although I bought this car in Palm Beach, FL, the restoration was done here in Arizona.
Here’s a brief description of what’s up for auction. Write through eBay, or call me directly to discuss anything in depth (Chip Porter / 520-455-0454).
Engine
Short block Gen V 502 cu.in. purchased from Apple Chevrolet. Original 502’s had no provision for a clutch ball, but Apple was fabricating them so I could run my 4-speed.
Four bolt mains, forged steel crank (standard, not turned), forged heavy duty rods with 7/16” bolts, bored .030 (4” stroke / 4.5” bore = 509 cu. In.), custom J&E 10.5:1 forged pistons / Speed Pro rings. Crane hydraulic roller cam (.621 / .632 lift) with Cloyes double roller timing set, Brodix polished aluminum BB1OEFI cylinder heads, Edelbrock polished aluminum Performer RPM intake manifold, one-off custom polished aluminum valve covers, Holley 4150 vacuum secondary carburetor modified by the Carburetor Shop to flow 926 CFM (and powder coated silver), Weiand polished aluminum water pump, Street and Performance polished aluminum serpentine system (with remote power steering reservoir). Polished aluminum 2 x 1” core Be Cool radiator / electric Mk VIII Continental thermostatically controlled fan, Hooker Competition Plus Jet Hot Coated headers with 2 5/8” primary tubes feeding a custom 3” dual exhaust with two big block Flowmaster mufflers. MSD 6AL ignition and Mallory billet distributor. Engine and MSD painted body color (Hugger Orange). Engine dyno’d at 604 HP and 642 lb. ft. of torque on 91 octane pump gas (see dyno sheet).
Drive Train
Centerforce clutch, Muncie M-21 close ratio 4-speed transmission (original), Hurst Competition Plus shifter with T-handle, 12 bolt positraction rear (3.55 gears) – also original, TA Performance Aluminum inspection cover with built in carrier bearing supports.

Superior spindles 2” dropped spindles with 12” rotors, stock rear drum brakes; QA 1 coil over shocks / low pressure gas rear shocks, Lawson Engineering Eliminator Bars (stops wheel hop under hard acceleration), boxed lower control arms on 4 link suspension. New American Racing Torque Thrust II mags (18 x8’s and 18 x 10’s) with new 225 x 45 ZR18’s front and 285 x 40 ZR 18’s.
General
Comes with matching number 325 HP 396 (oil pan through valve covers – no intake or above). Also has its exhaust manifolds (not pictured) and its 5 original SS wheels (4 trim rings because that’s how they came), and jack. Side stripes are painted, not stick-on. Headlights are all original T-3’s. Comes with a polished aluminum air cleaner (for show only – visible in the picture of the news article). Buy the way, it won “Best of Show” that day. Comes with a really nice car cover from Cover King. Watch a video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79GAPqr0pFs
