STK 2147 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
The 2nd generation Chevelle SS396 has become one of the most popular muscle cars ever built. That said, a 1969 Chevelle is certainly a difficult car to positively identify as an original SS396. In ’69, the SS396 was only an option code (RPO Z25) to the Malibu model and not identified in the vin sequence. The best way to document an SS396 is to have the original paperwork (build sheet or chassis broadcast sheet), or the original engine with the car's vin suffix code. However, there are some other avenues to pursue. This beautiful ’69 coupe experienced a rotisserie frame-off restoration. The interior is black vinyl with bucket seats, console, Muncie shifter and all the correct gauges. The body was sprayed Dover White with a contrasting black vinyl top and correct SS sport stripping. Wheels are GM Rally II (SS caps) and tires are period correct redline bias-ply. Power-assisted front discs/rear drums control stopping. The engine is not matching numbers, but the entire drivetrain was totally rebuilt. The engine builder started with a 402/375HP out of a 1970 SS. (This motor has always been referred to as a 396, but starting in late ’69 was actually factory bored .030 over to 402.) It has been blueprinted, has Mark IV heads, solid lifter cam, high-rise aluminum intake and correct 780cfm Holley. The transmission is an M22 Muncie, case number 392566. The 12-bolt positraction differential that had been geared 3.31:1 now houses 4.10:1 gears. This differential housing is stamped with a ‘CF’ prefix code. All differentials with this ‘CF’ code were only installed in ‘69 Chevelle models with the L34(396/350hp) or the L35(396/325hp) option packages. Therefore, even though the Chevelle does not have the original engine or build sheets, the differential code leads us to strongly surmise that the car left the factory as an Z25 optioned SS396 325/350. This Chevelle is a very nice example of a classic muscle car and will vastly improve someone’s garage space. It should be yours. ALL VEHICLES SOLD “AS IS”.
