1986 Conquest TSI made by Mitsubishi for Chrysler / 51,218 miles / OHC, 156-cid, inline 4 / engine runs smooth /fuel-injected, intercooled turbo / 5 speed manual / rear wheel drive / limited slip differential / 4 wheel disc brakes / Exterior: Black / hatchback / Interior: Black leather interior, bucket seats, cruise control, dual power mirrors, power windows and power locks, all factory gauges, AM/FM/Cassette player with equalizer, black carpet, rear seats fold down / nice rubber weather stripping / I’ve owned this car for the past 27 years / garaged since 1991 / not licensed since 1992 / has never been exposed to snow or salt since that time if not longer / no rust on body / few spots of very light surface rust on underbody / beautiful performance car / would make a great addition to someone’s car collection or a museum / this is possibly one of the nicest unmodified Conquests for sale in the country.
The car has only been occasionally driven around the block during the past 25 years. During that time, it hasn't been out on the highway or driven at high speeds. Neighborhood driving doesn't allow you to go past 2nd or 3rd gear at the most.
The car runs and drives well, but the following known mechanical issues that affect drivability will need to be addressed at the minimum to make the car roadworthy / relay rod is worn where the joint attaches to the passenger side idler arm (needs replacement)(part provided with car) / experiencing some brake drag in one or more calipers ( I’m not an expert but the pads and rotors appear to be good from what I can see)(calipers don’t appear to be leaking)(may only need to perform routine brake maintenance: basic pin & pad lubricating, flush & bleed brake lines with new fluid) / car is due for routine fluid changes even though they still look good: anti-freeze ( I’ve always blended it with distilled water), oil & filter. Recently, the fuel pump and fuel pickup screen inside the gas tank were replaced.
This car will need a full sized car trailer that sits low with good ramps to safely transport it to its new home. If you are considering purchasing this car please be prepared to properly transport it. The front air dam on this model of car is extremely close to the ground. The following are the car dimensions: (Overall length 173.2) (Overall width 68.3) (Overall height 50.1) (Ground clearance 4.8) (Wheel base 95.9).
The car has some other minor mechanical issues that do not affect the operation of the car / rear hatch windshield wiper and defogger doesn’t work (blows fuse, possible short) / air conditioning doesn’t work (possible leak at compressor) / power antenna for radio doesn’t raise up (several inches of the antenna are exposed and you do get good radio reception) / power mirror switch will allow mirrors to adjust up & down but will not adjust in & out (possibly a bad switch). I am unable to offer any honest feedback on the cruise control since I've never used it.
The car had a minor accident in the early 1990’s in which the front of the driver’s side front fender was slightly damaged and repaired. The previous owner scuffed up the skid plate, oil pan and small section of the frame rail on the underside of car (shown in several pictures). This caused a pinhole leak on the oil pan (stopped leak by applying a sealant). The car has always had a small oil leak at the plate between the engine and the transmission (very small drop every 3 to 4 days). Some of the radio buttons on the radio & steering wheel are showing wear. The mirror flaps on the sun visors are starting to separate on the sides. A small corner section of the rear hatch floor that covers the spare tire has broken off (shown in picture). The plastic upper moulding on the hatch glass has a 5 inch hairline crack in it (difficult to see in its picture). The car has its share of paint chips, dings and slight scratches which is typical for a 30 year old car with most of its original paint. The tire rims have some scuff marks and the finish shows some signs of light corrosion (shown in pictures). However, the car and wheels show really well and you hardly notice any of the imperfections.
The car is still equipped with its spare tire and jack stand. The following items will be included in the sale of the car (new relay rod, Factory Service Manual, Owner’s Manual, 2 sets of keys and a performance review of the car model in the 1986 April edition of Hot Rod magazine).
I have gone over this car to describe and show you to the best of my abilities the highlights and imperfections of this car. Regardless of some of its shortcomings, I believe this near original Conquest is one of the finest examples that are still in existence today. This is a great opportunity for the right person.
