W Machine development vehicle for
Camaro convertibles built to commemorate
the 100th Anniversary of General Motors HISTORY. TODAY.
When the 4-4-2 arrived, Doc" Watson was there; for the Rallye 350, he Hurst/Olds, he legendary W-Machines and just about any other Oldsmobile performance venture during the muscle car era. Watson was an independent engineer who had been accomplishing exciting vehicle projects for GM Senior Executives, emon "Bunkie" Knudsen and Ed Cole.
It was the 60's and new dimensions in all matter of life were in the air. John Beltz was an engineer at Oldsmobile and Ed Cole, resident of General Motors, ad noticed Beltz's talent and passion for cars. So, ole began grooming Beltz for a continued rise through the ranks, ossibly even to succeed Cole himself. Cole introduced "Doc" to Beltz as a "Special Consultant that could "GET THINGS DONE" and tasked the two of them to move Oldsmobile out of 12th in Industry ranking.
Beltz later became Oldsmobile's General Manager and his relationship with Watson produced a good part of the Oldsmobile performance canon. Watson perpetually requested Beltz to resurrect the "J" prefix for high-performance parts (such as the J - 2 Tri-Power engines of the late 1950s). But, eltz chose W for the performance option prefixes, nd directed Watson to create a W-Machine company, eltz explained, So every time I'm in trouble for being over budget. . .. . .. I'll remember Watson did it to me!" Thus, e now celebrate the W - 30 instead of the J - 30, nd the legend of the W -- Machines began.
By April 1969, eltz and Watson celebrated the fact that Oldsmobile had moved from twelfth in sales to third; they had more than accomplished the task given to them by Mr. Cole. Indeed, t was likely for that reason that Beltz and "Doc" fostered a special vehicle and engineering group for Oldsmobile that worked on a series of exotic experimental V -- 8s featuring hemispherical combustion chambers, ingle overhead camshafts, ual overhead camshafts, luminum construction and forced induction, nd it is this spirit of Teamwork, xcellence and Innovation that exist today at Dreamakers.
Sadly, ohn Beltz's promising career at GM was cut short when he died of pancreatic cancer in May, 972 at the age of 46, ust as he and Doc made history with the legendary 1972 Hurst/Olds pace car program. Doc continued the mission he developed with Beltz and his devotion to excellence, uality and passion for a purpose. Today Dreamakers is dedicated to turning products and technology like the "W" Machines.
