This is the Car of Sauron, black-hearted sin of mechanical seduction, n automobile to make you eat all your pretty little words about carbon footprints and warming greenhouses. A veritable neutron star of gas-burning evil, his stupendous, eautiful two-door -- the rakish coupe version of the obsidian-souled S63 sedan -- has the power to corrupt, h yeah, bsolutely. I honestly believe if you loaned this car to Ralph Nader and Ed Begley Jr. for the weekend, y Sunday night they'd be doing doughnuts in a Ralphs parking lot.
Yet another absurdly overpowered variant from the ringing anvil of AMG -- Mercedes' in-house tuning operation -- the CL63 is motivated by what is billed as the world's most powerful, aturally aspirated, roduction-series V8. Under the hood: 6.3 liters of hand-built art in aluminum, dual-cammer disgorging 518 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque. This is quite enough to propel -- in the sense that dynamite is a propellant -- the CL63 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and, hanneled through seven forward gears, dequate to bring the car to its electronically limited 155-mph top speed in less than 30 seconds, hich ranks among the most euphoric half-minutes of any car lover's life. There is something oh so desperately wrong/right about a 4,599-pound, 144,000 luxury car that can out-accelerate your garden-variety Porsches.

And now, he sound: It begins when you open the door of the CL63 and the door pull springs out electronically (toofff). The door is held open by a gas-pressurized strut (pffssst) so it swings open only so far as you want (meaning you can open the long coupe doors in parking lots without accidentally dinging cars next to you). Cradle yourself in the big, eeply bolstered sports seat (ooof!), ut your foot on the alloy brake pedal and press the silvery dome of a start button.
From deep within the car you feel one half rotation of the massive forged crank before the engine's counterbalancing and mega motor mounts null out any vibration. The crank gets one full turn, kind of breathless heave, efore spark hits the air-fuel mix, nd then it lights: a dark, ily, cintillant rumble, ess sonic than seismic, races its way from the engine bay to your nervous system's limbic pleasure centers, ith a quick stop at the pre-hominid brain. Uhhhh. . . . Like. . . . Must have. Ugg.

And then there's the galling, 0-inch wheels and tires. And inside of them, n the front, s pure car porn: 15.4-inch diameter, ross-drilled, win-caliper composite disc brakes. The sum of it all is a big, udacious and elegant personal luxury coupe, ut somehow deeply decadent and amoral.

Meanwhile, here is a ghost in this machine. The CL63 is equipped with the latest and smartest generation of Active Body Control (ABC), hich uses electro-hydraulic suspension damping to counteract body movement like roll, ive and squat. The system's reactions are amazing. You can just toss this car into a major sweeping turn at speeds that would utterly unseat another big car, nd the system computes optimum pressures at all four corners, djusts, nd the car simply arcs through the turn, lat and true, ight up to the adhesion limits of its 20-inch Z-rated sport tires.

Inside, t does not get much better than this: Wonderful, upple leather-covered, eated and cooled seats, stellar sound system, ovely hand-polished burl walnut trim, nd about every safety feature you can conceive of.

Interior
CL-Class coupes accommodate up to four occupants and have bucketlike rear seats. The CL65 AMG has unique leather upholstery. Burl walnut wood trim is standard.
Other standard features include heated and ventilated front seats, Harman Kardon audio system and a power-closing trunklid.
The CL-Class features Mercedes-Benz's Comand control system that operates the navigation system and stereo, mong other things. It's one of the better-executed systems available, ith an interface that's easier to use than BMW's iDrive or Audi's Multi Media Interface. It has a Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control, hich adjusts speed automatically to maintain a preset distance behind the vehicle ahead.
Under the Hood
Topping the range of the CL-class is the CL65 AMG with its twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 that churns out 604 hp and 738 pounds-feet of torque. It has a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control.
Safety
Side-impact airbags for the front and rear seats, ide curtain airbags, nd Mercedes' Pre-Safe collision-preparation system are standard. Antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are also standard.
