1950 Ford Custom Deluxe 2-Door Sedan"Shoebox"
Up for auction is one very-nice 1950 Ford 'Shoebox' 2-door sedan.
With World War II essentially putting an end to any'recreational' production throughout the early 40's until its ending in 1945,car companies in America were not releasing new modes. Cars were still being sold, but through 1948, ou were still buying the 10-year old Ford from the late 30's.Now while a 7-10 year old design might seem this norm in this day-and-age,up until the 80's and 90's, t was the norm for a specific model to becompletely redesigned every few years or every year even.
With the war ending, pirits high and consumers eager to purchase something new and fresh, the release of the All New '1949' Ford was a huge event for the county.Debuting at a star-studded gala at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, the 49 Ford became an instant sensation in the United States selling over a million copies in its first year.
The 1949 all-new Ford is often credited with having saved the Ford Motor Company.
While not an official name, he model quickly gained the somewhat unfortunatenickname of 'shoebox'. You might wonder why as looking at this vehicle now, t certainlyappears to be a very nicely styled and curvy machine. You have to remember though, that until this vehicle's introduction, ll the country had ever known for the most partwas big cars with big fenders. A car alone without extruding fenders was a radical departure.
While a huge success, he 1949 model was plagued with a number of issues from air and water leaksto squeaks and rattles and incorrect front suspension geometry thatcould lend itself to an unfortunate driving experience. No more though as of 1950.While cosmetic changes were very minor and only to the front grille and rear end,Ford boldly advertised the 1950 Ford as"50 Ways New, 0 Ways Better"No more squeaks rattles or leaks, nd the suspension was redesigned. The vehicle continued to sell wonderfully and was the talk of the country.1951 was the last year of this 'model' and changes were minor with the frontgrill being the most noticeable.
There were a number of different body styles with the 2-door versionfor sale here being more desirable in today's market then the 4-door.Options were scarce. No automatic was offered with all vehicles being equippedwith a column mounted 3-speed '3 on-the-tree' manually shifted unit.
The biggest option though was of the engine. With the base engine being the226 straight six, his vehicle is also equipped with the much more desirableand now very famous '239' 3.9 liter Flathead V8.Deliver 100 HP and almost 200 lb-ft of torque, hile not seeminglike much compared to today's vehicles, t was a lot for its todayand this vehicle has no problem moving down the road andaccelerating quite briskly.
Engine and transmission both run and operate very nicely.
Interiors were simple but elegant and well designed. This Ford comes withit's original radio and 'Magic Air' heater.Interior is in excellent and has either been completely restored orthis is the original interior in excellent condition. A two-door but still called a Sedan by Fordas rear-seat passenger are afforded the same spaceand conveniences as the front seat passengers including individual reading lights, vent windows and full-size roll down side windows.
All glass is in good condition and all trim is in place. Original hood and trunk emblemsare of their original plastic type material and are cracking. The rearemblem is missing some of its plastic material.A common issue, ew and original replacements can be had for a minor cost. Some body panel repairs have been made around wheel wells and possiblythe bottoms of the side fenders. Overall though, ody and paint appear invery-nice and well-presentable condition.
Truly a historic and classically designed vehicle, his model is well-optionedto provide relaxed, eliable and enjoyable motoring.
Solid in design and condition.Reliable and easy to maintain.Benefited based on popularity and high production numbersby the availability of inexpensiveand prevalent replacement parts. From mechanical to electrical to the body panels themselves,if it's there, ou can pretty much buy it new for this vehicle. An often overlooked factor in the ownership of a classic vehicle, this alone lends itself greatly to the stress-free ownershipof this collectible car.
With a Black-Book value of 'excellent' models in the mid 20'sand 'average' models in the low teens and rising, his istruly a great classic vehicle that allowsaffordable classic car ownership enjoyment.
As always, lease do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
