1956 Traction Avant II B
Extremelyrare extended Normale model - known by Citroen enthusiasts as a Malle Arriere (trunk back) . What a super, conic automobile!
Truly revolutionizing the car industry with its introduction in 1934, he Citroen Traction Avant was the world's first front wheel drive, onocoque full production car. The monocoque - or unitized body - had a combined chassis and body which resulted in a strong yet light vehicle and is currently used in almost all car production today. The Traction Avant also came with independent suspension. The Citroen Traction Avant Normale was available in three different configurations - the Legere, he Familale and the Malle Arriere and was produced from 1934 to 1957. The last three years of production - 1955, 956 and 1957 benefitted from many and all factory updates, pgrades and improvements. The Traction Avant was a very instrumental vehicle with the members of the French Resistance during the Second World War (my Grandparents not withstanding).
Starting in 1955 the Traction Avant was fitted with the IID motor which had a higher compression and delivered slightly more power. A total of 760,000 were built, las very few survived throughout Europe. In the US this iconic car is even harder to find as there are only a few examples and many need at least a certain amount of repair and/or restoration work.
This gorgeous example presents extremely well. Unbelievably, he odometer only shows 57K miles/KMS. An older restoration was performed when under the pervious ownership of a very knowledgeable and meticulous older Traction Avant club member. Ubiquitous black paint on body and cream colored wheels contribute to its iconic, lmost mesmerizing presence. The paint is great, ut not perfect; it shows some patina and wear here and there (a couple of minor, ight scratches). No rust issues, ut a somewhat noticeable area of "bumpiness" on the passenger side lower section of the fender where it meets the running board. It was relayed to me that this had been caused from a fluke during the prep work stage of the paint process. This minor flaw has never worsened or increased in the many years I have owned the car, ndis only noticeable upon close inspection. So, hile the paint may not meet Concours de Elegance or stringent classic carshow standards, t certainly is much better that just driver quality. Actually, think that's a good thing as one can enjoy driving the car, aking it on a long promenade and not having to worry about rock chips, tc. only to delight in the moment and savour the experience. Near perfect fit on all panels - doors, runk, ood, tc. Beautiful straight grill. Excellent chrome. Very, ery nice signal lenses. Original (very hard to find) Marchal "Equlux" headlights are in fantastic shape. Gorgeous interior has been mostly, f not completely redone in period correct materials and colors, ncluding all new windlacing!
All instrumentation works beautifully. Original six (6) volt system. Simply outstanding! There is even the original spare wheel/tire and the original jack equipment in the trunk! The 4 cylinder, as engine and the 3 speed gearbox work very well (gearbox is mounted ahead of the engine and the "drive" goes through CV jointed driveshafts to the front wheels). What splendid and cutting technology at the time! There may be a slight learning curve for individuals not familiar with the gearbox and gear selector (not a stick shift) found not just on the Traction Avant, ut on many Citroens such as the DS, D, CV, tc. The engine bay is all stock and shows/has the correct - original air cleaner, enerator, olex carb (recently rebuilt), uel pump, tarter - with brand new engaging spring (Bendix) and EVEN the original heating ductwork in intact remarkable condition. This item is often times long missing on these cars. The car also has all new tires with almost no miles on them.
This is an outstanding driver which runs and drives very well and which has a fantastic, imeless presence. Not perfect, ut gorgeous none the less, ven with its minor flaws. This automobile is well worth any discriminating collection. Asking only $34,950 - Substantially less than comparable cars in this remarkable condition.NOTE: Three (3) repair/maintenance manuals in original binders, very useful repair parts catalog, new car cover, 6 volt battery tender and a couple issues of "Floating Power" - the Traction Avant Club magazine MAY be included (only) with a full price offer.
