RARE 1988 Ford ASC McLaren Convertible#878 of 1015 built
Extremely rare FOX BODY Mustang, laqued and numbered #878 or 1015 madein 1988 with only 14,795 original miles on odometer confirmed by Autocheck. Although, ue to the vehicles age, n most states, t is considered mileage exempt. the desirable5.0L V8 302 engine and4 Speed automatic.
The ASC McLaren was designed to add European flare to American Muscle. They are rarely seen outside of collections and many will immediately say “What is that?” or“Is that a McLaren?”
The simple answer is it is a Ford Mustang that was a factory authorized option that was headed by both ASC and McLaren to offer a higher priced and more custom Mustang option similar to what Shelby or Saleen did; although with the focus more on appearance. This is an extremely nice example and will make a great conversation piece and a investment in automobile history. A chance to buy a low production car before the pricing makes them unattainable.
History of the ASC McLaren: McLaren is well known in the racing arena for their expertise in engine and chassis building. Back in 1981, cLaren teamed with Ford to make an ultra low production Mustang to showcase the then new body style. In 1983, SC brought McLaren onboard to help create the unique automobile, roviding spings, hocks, truts, nd wheels.
Muscat and ASC designed the convertible to be a 2 seater with a manual top that complete folds under a hard cover like the Mercedes SL line of the day. It was a very distinct difference compared to the Mustang droptop. Most of the modifications were limited to cosmetics rather than performance, espite the McLaren name on the side.
The best years of ASC/McLaren were about to begin. This time ASC had full backing from Ford which included full factory warranty, dvertising, nd actually a rebate program to help fuel sales in an otherwise slow sales year. Although the price of the car had risen into the $25,000 range, SC and Ford managed to sell 479 of the new convertibles. So not to compete with the GT's, atchbacks were no longer offered. With the change to the Mustang body for 1987, ales inched up slightly to 479 cars.
1988 saw the ASC/McLaren's sales more than double, elling over 1000 cars for the first time. Leather seats, heel and shift knob, SC only center console, remium sound system, " lowering sport springs, nd 15x7 McLaren wheels with Gatorbacks were now all standard. With the optional ground effects package, he ASC/McLaren's sleek design was a marked contrast from the "boy racer" looks of the Mustang GT. Total 1988 production was 1015 cars, he peak of ASC/McLaren Mustang sales -ascMcClaren.org
Condition: Very nice low mileage example, hat shows in its overall condition and vibe. It would be virtually next to impossible to restore a ASC McLaren back to this type of condition as not all parts are not easily available. You can tell this car has been well cared for and garaged most of its life, s attested to by it interior and overall condition. Please view all of the photographs as they will give you a very good idea on the condition of this car. The exterior has be recently repainted and looks great with a lot of depth and shine. The interior appears original and in good condition from the dash to the seats to the carpet. The top is is great shape with minimal wear showing where it rubs when lowered. The tires do have good tread but are a little older with some checking on them. Over all there may be a little nick or wear here and there, ut the appearance is of an extremely well preserved Mustang. I think I am being a little picky here, s I would rank this car in the top percentile of Fox Body’s for sale out there. I have driven her on a 3 hour road trip and she was totally road worthy. If you have any specific questions please ask away, ecause what is important to you may be different then me. If you are looking for a collection caliber car or an appreciating asset I think this would be a great option.
