Forty years after Ford unleashed its all-conquering Cobra Jet Mustangs into NHRA Super Stock competition, t repeated that historic feat with the 2008 Ford Mustang FR500 Cobra Jet aimed at NHRA’s sportsman classes. High-profile Ford performance dealer Bob Tasca conceived the first Cobra Jet in 1968, hen he challenged Dearborn with his version of a lightweight Mustang Fastback powered by a 428 CI FE big-block engine specially built by Tasca’s engine expert John Healey. Testing at Ford’s Dearborn test track showed that it was the quickest Mustang ever, nd Ford decided to follow Tasca’s formula building 50 lightweight Mustangs powered by the new engine that first carried the Cobra Jet name. Like its namesake, he 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang was limited to 50 production race-ready examples specially configured for NHRA drag racing. Like its sister Mustang Challenge FR500S and the FR500C production racer for Grand Am road racing, he FR500CJ were turnkey cars available through Ford Racing, nd all were snapped up in record time. This 2008 FR500 Cobra Jet from the Rick Davis Ford Collection may be familiar to viewers of the popular television show Pinks, n which it made its only two passes down the drag strip. 1 of of the 50 produced and a part of the Rick Baker Ford Collection since new, t wears both the optional Ford Cobra Jet graphics package and the Rod Baker Racing livery and now shows just 38 miles on the odometer car has been driven to local events and is surprisingly street able . Ford’s 5.4L supercharged engine with a standard 6-speed manual transmission and a drag race wheel/tire combination, he car has an NHRA Stock Eliminator legal interior and is NHRA approved and certified for 10-second runs.
