Up for auction is a very nice example of a 1970 Series 1 Datsun 240Z.Very low original mileage, two owner rust-free car that has spent it's entire life in California, Arizona, and Nevada.
I purchased this car from the original owner in California approximately 12 years ago. At the time, it had 69,000 documented miles on it. The previous owner had made a few changes to the car over the years, including replacing the hood with a vented hood from the 280z. Also, he had replaced the original E31 head with an E88 head from a later 240z. My intent with the purchase was to restore the car to like new or better condition, while creating a look and drivability that would be equally comfortable as either a daily driver or a weekend show car. Additionally, I wanted any modifications or customizations that I used for the car to be reasonably easy to return to OEM spec, should a future buyer want a concourse OEMrestoration. I believe that all of those objectives were realized with this restoration.
This Z is a head turner. From the high quality paint job (the original 905 Datsun red was replaced with a deeper red made by BMW for their 300 series cars in the nineties), to the high polished aluminum engine parts and chrome work), it really stands out among the crowd. I had wanted a look that resembled the black trim on red that was used so successfully with the '60's-'70's era vintage Mustangs, and feel that the goal was accomplished. The car comes complete with many detailed pics of the restoration and the paint.
Mechanically, this car is in excellent condition. It drives straight and fast, stops quickly (for 46 year old technology), and has proven to be the single most reliable ride that I have owned in the past 12 years. It starts with the first flip of the key, and I would trust this car to drive it across the country without so much as a tune-up. Never overheats, ( probably due to the 3 core aluminum radiator upgrade), even in the hot Nevada desert summers.
The interior is mostly original, with the exception of a new carpet kit installed during the restoration. Prior to replacing the interior, the paint and body shop installed q-pads and dyno-mat throughout the car in order to provide sound deafening and better insulation. Most of the restoration was performed by Spanky's Auto Body in Phoenix, Az, a shop that specialized in Z's and produced many award-winning cars at the various Z car show events. Most of the receipts and photos of the restoration have been kept, and will be made available to the new owner.
While not perfect, this rare1970 series 1 Datsun 240Z is in overall exceptional condition. Drive it as is and enjoy your trophies from weekendcar meets/shows, or tweak a few things for a true concours level restoration.
