TheFerrari 550 Maranello was presented in July 1996 at the Nurburgringracing circuit in Germany.The model name referred to the 5.5-litres total engine displacement in decilitresand to the town of Maranello, ome to the Ferrari headquarters and factory. Pimimfarinaexecuted both the exterior and interior design.Frame and main engine components were shared with the 2+2 Ferrari 456,although at 2,500mm (98.4in) the 550's wheelbasewas 100mm (3.9in) shorter. In total 3,083 units of the 550 Maranello were produced.
The 550 used a front-engine, ear-wheel drive transaxellayout, ith the 6-speed gearboxlocated at the rear axle together with the limited slip differential. The chassis tubular steel space frame, o which the aluminiumbody panels were soldered.The Pininfarina-designed body had a drag-coefficientof 0.33.Suspension was of the double wishbonetype with coaxial coil springand damperunits on all four corners, nd anti-roll barsfront and rear. The steering was rack and pinionwith variable power assist. The vented disc brakeswere 330mm (13.0in) at the front and 310mm (12.2in) at the rear. Magnesium alloywas used for the 18-inch wheels.Electronic driver aid systems included anti-slip regulation, hich could be adjusted on two levels or switched off completely, nd four-way anti-lock braking system.
The engine is a naturally aspirated65° V12with 4 valves per cylinder, ual overhead camsand a variable length intake manifold. It displaced 5,473.91cc (334.0cuin) and produced 485PS (357kW; 478hp) at 7,000rpm and 568.1N·m (419lb·ft) at 5,000rpm. Bore and stroke measure 88mm and 75mm.
According to the manufacturer the 550 Maranello had a top speed of 320km/h (199mph), nd could accelerate from a standstill to 100km/h (62mph) in 4.4seconds.Testing the 550 Maranello in 2000, merican car magazine Motor Trendrecorded a 0 to 60 miles per hour (0 to 97km/h) acceleration time of 4.2 seconds, 0 to 100mph (0 to 161km/h) time of 9.6seconds, nd a 1/4 mile (0.4 km)performance of 12.5seconds at 116.9mph.
