Introduced as the flagship of the Ferrari line, the Maranello replaced a long line of mid-engined cars that began with the Berlinetta Boxer and was continued by the Testarossa. Meant to recapture the glory days of Ferrari’s legendary front-engined sports cars (most notably the 275GTB and 365GTB/4 Daytona), the Maranello is an indisputably beautiful car. The Pininfarina styling is masculine and muscular without being overstated or excessively macho, and the proportions are spot-on. Originally introduced as the 550, the 575 replaced it in 2002, and brought a host of improvements in terms of styling and on the mechanical side as well. These included increasing the power to 515hp, larger brakes, improved aerodynamics, and many other minor changes. Buyers could now outfit their vehicles with an F1-style gearbox, which proved to be a very popular option, but today, it is the select few 6-speed cars which are acutely desired by Ferrari enthusiast for their collectability and driving enjoyment.
This particular 575M Maranello example is one of about 209 factory 6-speed equipped cars delivered new to the US marketplace, and was sold new through Ferrari of Atlanta to its first owner, Mr. E. T. Perry of Fairburn, Georgia in early 2004. In addition to the rare gated shifter, it was optioned with Daytona style seats with red inserts, Scuderia Ferrari shields, Modular 19-inch wheels, high power hifi with subwoofer, all stitching in color, and shod with Pirelli tires. It appears the first major service was performed by Autosports Designs Inc, in February of 2007 at 9,025 miles. By 2010 the car was in the dry climate of the west coast and received a major timing belt, tensioner, and intake gasket service in late 2010 at 22,409 miles, performed by Ferrari and Maserati of San Diego, California. It was under the current custodianship that the most recent and current major service was performed in January of 2014 at 25,987 miles by Ferrari Service and Restoration of Fountain Hills, AZ. Since that time the car has covered less than 3,000 miles.
The car retains a very sharp driver level presentation. The front bumper aside, the paint appears to be original and in good condition. There is wear to the windshield, and the black window trim and rubbers are showing some age, but overall the car makes a strong impression. The engine bay is beautiful, although the hood struts are on the tired side. The interior is also in good order, with just light wear and age evident on the seats and carpets, and the sticky switch phenomena common to Ferraris of this era. The dash, which is prone to shrinkage, has been redone in the past and is in very fine shape at this time. Since delivery, the windows have been tinted and a 3M clear bra installed on the forward facing areas of the car.
Included with the car are the books and tools, the air inflator kit, and a book of service receipts and previous ownership documentation confirming regular upkeep, and the gentle accumulation of mileage.
This is an extraordinarily appealing example of this attractive model. Its service history and cosmetic presentation, and rare 6-speed manual configuration make this car very desirable to the discerning Ferrari enthusiast. We find the 550 and even more so, the 575 Maranellos, to be the single modern Ferrari series with rapidly appreciating values, making this example both a rationally and emotionally appealing proposition. Indeed, Recent sales data points for low mileage examples have been approaching half a million dollars, and the expectation is that they will continue to advance.
