The introduction of the Ford Mustang created more excitement and interest than the introduction of any car we can remember. After months of rumors and gossip. including news leaks that may or may not have been genuine. the car was finally introduced at the Ford Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. There was much television hoopla. it appeared on the covers of Newsweek and Time. and it was the center of much excited order-placing at Ford dealers across the land. A few handbuilt prototypes had been made available to the automotive press before the introduction and the basic details of the car. plus some driving impressions. were presented in the May issue of Road & Track. Since that time. the first exhilarating flush has passed (though delivery is still running as much as three months behind in some areas) and we have had a chance to put the Mustang through its paces for a Road & Track road test. We drove about 2000 mi in three different cars—the 260-cubic in. V-8 with 3-speed manual transmission. the 289-in. 210-bhp 4-speed and the 289-in. automatic. Both the 260 3-speed and the 289 automatic had power steering and power brakes while the 289 4-speed had neither. All three were standard street-version machines as the "high-performance" version with the 271-bhp engine and "handling" options is still several months away. We chose to use the 289 4. speed as the car we would concentrate on (and describe in the data panel) as it. in theory at least. should be of greatest interest to the enthusiast. To review the car's characteristics briefly. the Mustang has a welded-up platform-type chassis with a reinforcing box attached to the front end to add torsional rigidity as well as house the engine and furnish attaching points for the front suspension. There is nothing unusual about the suspension. It is typically straightforward Detroit independent at the front and has a beam axle located by semi-elliptical leaf springs at the rear. In wheelbase. track and overall length. the dimensions of the Mustang are almost identical to those of the Ford Falcon. The roofline is about three inches lower and the car is about three inches narrower. however. so the Mustang is proportionately smaller in frontal area. 19. 3 sq ft. compared with the 21. 6 sq ft of the Falcon. There are tow body styles. hardtop coupe and convertible. but the hardtop may also be had with a vinyl covering for a slightly different appearance. In Detroit jargon. eight basic "power teams" are offered. These are: Engine: 170-cu-in 6. 260-cu-in v-8. 289-cu-in v-8. 289-cu-in v-8 Power: 101-bhp. 164 bhp. 210 bhp. 271 bhp Transmissions: 3-spd. 4-spd. or automatic; 3-spd or automatic; 4-spd or automatic; 4-spd only Differentials: 3. 20. 3. 50; 3. 00; 3. 00; 3. 89. 4. 11 The appearance of the Mustang is undoubtedly its most distinctive feature. As it is the same overall length as the Falcon. most of the distinction results from sliding the passenger compartment about nine inches toward the rear which gives it a proportionately longer hood and short rear deck. This also results in the driver being relocated about 9 in farther from the front of the car and reducing the luggage space from Detroit cavernous to what might be called adequate for weekend trips. The overall design of the Mustang has created little controversy. almost everyone agreeing that the appearance is attractive. Of a panel of 10 observers whose opinion we solicited. eight scored it as "good. two thought it was "fair. and none regarded it as "poor. " The detail execution. the "styling". of the Mustang is less effective. however. with only one of four experts re
