Famous “car guy” 1st owner
I was informed by the fellow I purchased this car from that it had been purchased new by well known “car guy”, nbsp;Al Moss. The former owner had personally visited with Al about the car and Al mailed him his book entitled “The Other Moss”. Al’s Mustang (this very car) is on page 160 of that book. The book is included with the car along with the MARTI Report.
In the late 1940’s, l Moss became “the founding pioneer” of the southern California sports car racing scene referred to as the West Coast Rallies. An original car guy from the early days, l’s name lives on today through the company he went on to found called “MOSS MOTORS”, hich remains as one of the largest distributors of vintage sports car parts in the world. Among many other accomplishments, r. Moss also authored two “car guy” books, ne of which is included with the car.
Al Moss orders a very “special” Mustang
In 1967 Al Moss decided he wanted to buy the all new Mustang. Given Al’s extensive background with high performance cars he knew exactly what he wanted in his “daily driver”. His timing was perfect. In 1967 Ford introduced the “390 S-code” which was the first big-block Mustang. This was Ford’s response to GM’s newly introduced “big block” equipped Camaros and Firebirds.
Performance Options …. ALL of them please
On July 11th, 967, l Moss went to his local Ford Dealer in Santa Barbara, alifornia and placed an order for a high option, igh performance Mustang. He ordered every performance option offered in 1967.
- S-code 390/320hp
- Top Loader 4-Speed tranny
- Limited Slip 9” heavy duty rear end
- Heavy Duty Suspension
- Power DICS Brakes
- Dual Exhaust
- Tachometer
Comfort Options
In addition to ordering every performance option available, L wanted some COMFORT in his Mustang and checked off the comfort options;
- Air Conditioning (…..rare option for a California car)
- Power Steering
- Power Brakes
- Courtesy lighting
- Tinted glass
Appearance Options
Not only did it have to be fast and comfortable it had to “look cool”. Al ordered his new Stang in Candy Apple Red, lack interior and loaded with the following appearance options;
- Rear Grill ……. ”ultra RARE”
- Deluxe Steering Wheel
- Blinker Hood
- Style Steel Wheels
- Bright Accent Trim
It is interesting to note that upon taking delivery of his Candy Apple Red Mustang, l did some minor cosmetic customizations to give it a more European look by removing all badges’ and emblems and installing large European style fog lamps. We rebadged the car to its original configuration and added the GT emblems and stripes.
The end result
Simply put, ot only is it visually stunning, t is in my opinion the most desirable 1967 Mustang coupe that I have ever laid eyes on. The interesting History, he awesome Options, nd the fantastic Condition of this car make it a uniquely desirable and very special Mustang. It will only go UP in value.
Condition / Body, echanical & Interior
* high integrity, aser straightbody that appears to be all original Ford panels (…the only repair I found was the lower 6 inches of the outer quarter panel on the drivers side … professional repair that is virtually undetectable)
* excellent "fit & finish" for factory Mustang standards
* show quality paint (deep wet, igh gloss look)
* excellent ORIGINAL floors that appear to be entirely original metal with the factory oxide primer still visible including the primer DRIPPINGS found only on original floors.
Mechanical / low miles on restoration
We took the car to our Mustang mechanic and had him give it a full in depth inspection to insure it was ready for on demand enjoyment. The car is in great shape. Everything works as it should and car performs well. The motor appears to have been rebuilt to a stock configuration. It does NOT have a big cam or high compression pistons or anything that reflects a non-stock approach to the rebuild. It even has its stock exhaust manifolds.
We do not know how many miles are on the restoration due to inability to contact the prior owner who did the work, owever my guess is very few. The motor is super clean (even under the valve covers … we checked). Everything under the hood appears new and/or to have been rebuilt with little usage since the restoration. I see no evidence of wear or high usage under the hood, r for that matter on any restored surface. At the time of this write-up the odometer is showing 33,780 and has most likely has rolled over. My guess is the car has traveled 133k since new, hich is really not a lot for a 48 year old car. Like the vast majority of almost 50 year old cars, his one drips a little oil.
* the motor sounds great, tarts easily and runs smooth
* shifts are tight and crisp
* all gauges are working
* exhaust is new
* brakes are new
* gas tank is new
* shocks are new
* all lights on the entire car work properly, nside and out
* NO issues noted
COLD Air Conditioning & warm Heat
This is a rare factory air car. However we updated the entire system with the modern components from “Vintage Air”. Everything is controlled just like it was from the factory using the original AC/heat controller mechanism. The air BLOWS much stronger than it did in 1967. You can drive it year round with reliable modern AC & heat.
This is a significant UPGRADE that really makes a difference in the real world usage of this car and in my opinion separates it from any other that has not had an equal upgrade. Labor and materials for this upgrade ran $3,000.
Interior
The interior is simply beautiful and appears to be new with no evidence of wear that I can find. It came from the factory as a “standard” black interior, ut we added some deluxe components to get that WOW factor everyone loves. All of the brushed aluminum is new and flawless.
Radio
Original working radio.
Tires & Wheels
The wheels are the correct 14" Style Steel Wheels with trim rings, nd the tires are 14” 215/70R Firestone Firehawks. The tires are holding air, owever, hey are older and have approximately 50% of tread remaining so I would recommend replacing them as early as possible.
