I admit it . I really love this truck. (Hence the price. ) If someone wants it they're going to have to swallow hard and step up a bit. just like I did! Seriously though. if you're a Ford truck guy . or are ready to be . this one's a real California find. right down to the blue plates. The condition is superb for an original. unrestored 32 year old truck. I bought it last month from its' 2nd owner. who purchased it from the first owner in 1998. The gentleman I bought it from has a small ranch about 60 miles away in Norco. and he told me that until about 3 years ago this truck was primarily used to haul horses to shows and competitions around the southwest. In 2012 his wife insisted on a newer truck for the show circuit. so he bought a late model dually (Ford. of course) Instead of parting with this one. though. he put it on non-op with the DMV and continued to drive it around the property. This is great news because on the off chance that this truck stays here in California. the buyer won't be surprised by any ridiculously expensive back fees when registering it. The California title is clean and clear. His property and everything on it was clean and well maintained. which helped me believe his assertion that the truck has been well maintained (in spite of the fact that he didn't keep a maintenance file on it. ) That his son just installed a new Master Brake Cylinder. Holley carb and MSD spark plug wires on it in anticipation of the sale also bodes well. I had a new heavy duty battery installed. filled up the front gas tank and drove it home. and here's my entire mechanical assessment: the truck starts. runs smoothly. shifts cleanly through all the gears and stops well. Beyond that. I can't tell you much more. I love old cars and trucks. but the minute the hood goes up I'm lost. Seriously. I have no mechanical aptitude. nor the desire to acquire any. Because of this shortcoming. I am willing to take the truck for an inspection to any Palm Springs mechanic of your choice. There's plenty of good ones on yelp. That way you can have it checked out from top to bottom . on your dime. of course! ;) The interior is probably the nicest. cleanest original interior I've ever seen on a classic truck. In short. the interior is why I bought it. Paint and engines can be fixed. but an interior is only original once. The reason it looks so good is because the seat covers and dash pad I removed and threw away the minute I got home had apparently been put on by the first owner when the car was new. Clearly they did their job. right?! The door panels were basically the only real flaw. so I spent a bundle on what were billed as the highest quality replacement panels available. Let's just say they weren't the answer I was looking for. It wasn't just that the color was way. way off. which it was . but they looked and felt incredibly cheap. What's more. they didn't even come with the huge map pocket pieces that take up the whole bottom third of the door. I have no idea what they expect someone to do here. because it's the map pockets that are the most worn part of the whole door panel. My solution was to restore all four original panels. I spent hours sanding. painting. and then repeating the process again. They came out OK. Not perfect by a long shot. but light years better than they were before. Where's the radio. right? It had an old. aftermarket radio with cassette that didn't fit at all and looked terrible. It sounded good . the speakers are nice quality . but I couldn't stand looking at it. You could see into the dash and everything. I'll happily ship it with the radio and you can just plug it back in if the aesthetics don't bother you. If I were keeping it. I'd track down an OEM Ford radio (or go crazy on a really nice new system. ) I have worked to restore original paint jobs before. but never as hard as I worked on this truck. The real problem was that the driver's door had been repainted some time ago with the newer base coat. clear coat process. so the door was considerably shinier than the rest of the truck. I gave very serious thought to having a higher end re-paint done. but I just couldn't help myself: I really wanted to see if I could restore an acceptable shine to the original paint. at least enough so that the clear-coated driver's door didn't stand out anymore. I spent evenings over the better part of two weeks polishing away the extreme dullness with cutting compounds from 3M's pro line; then I waxed. and waxed. and waxed some more. I finished almost a week ago and my body still aches. I'm pretty happy with how it all came out. though . the truck now has a mellow. gently aged patina that looks pretty darn good. if I do say so myself. If you like it in the pics. you're going to love it in person. All this said. if ever there was an old truck that made a great candidate for a quality re-paint. this is the one. The body panels are laser straight. not a speck of bondo anywhere . there would be virtually no bodywork at all. Here's the bottom line on this truck. at least for me: I love it because it doesn't scream "look at me!". but instead has a certain understated class and style. It's not showy. it's tasteful and original. I guess you could say that it's a gentleman's truck looking for its next gentleman owner. If that's you. hit the "Buy It Now" button and to show my appreciation. I'll fill it up with gas . both tanks! ;) About me: I'm a private party seller who buys several cars and/or trucks a year that I know will find a good homes with fellow ebayers. I've been at it since 2001 and have never had a single car deal go sideways. as evidenced by my perfect feedback score. I have fun hunting all over Southern California for original. unmolested. rust free 1970's and 80's vehicles with only one or two owners. I only buy what I like (or. in this case. love) and. since the "saving" aspect is the most gratifying part for me. I'm happy to pass these special cars along to those elsewhere in the country (and the world) where clean original vehicles of this vintage have long since rusted into the ground. Being in Palm Springs is great because not only is it an awesome hunting ground for low mileage. zero rust garage queens. but I can travel to virtually any "cool find" in Los Angeles.
