Occasionally an opportunity comes by to own a rare collector car that is authentic and with pedigree. While this may not be the only Mustang Mach 1 Cobra Jet available. it may certainly be the most collectable. Ordered by Mack Yates of Yates- Stevens Ford in Kirkwood MO. Mack kept this as his personal car. For those familiar with the glory days of Ford Performance. Yates-Stevens was one of a handful of high performance dealers authorized by Carol Shelby to sell the Shelby Cobra. Yates raced Corvettes and Cobras. In fact he won several SCCA titles. and to this day his CSX2385 ( owned by Dan Gerber the baby food heir) is on display at the Shelby America Collection Museum in its racing form. Because of his racing success. in 1963 Yates was offered a Ford dealership. The next year. he took delivery of his race prepared 289 Cobra . Yates campaigned the Shelby Cobra in various SCCA events throughout the Midwest. He knew performance and he wanted a car that boasted the 428 Cobra Jet. So he ordered the Mustang Mach 1 428 CJ. Equally important he wanted a comfortable ride for travel to and from the track. So in September of 1969. Yates took delivery of this unique and rare Mustang. Ahead of his contemporaries. he ordered the "Q Code" Mustang. Since he was a road racer. sustainable speed. torque. and handling was most important to him. He had Ford give him the powerful 428 Cobra Jet coupled with a C6 transmission and 3. 00 traction- lok rear end. High speed highway miles were effortless. Yates' order added SelectAire factory air conditioning to his Mach 1. This rare combination of options gave him the perfect car to commute to racing events during sweltering Midwest summers. Always the visionary. he had in 1970 what the Mustang has evolved into today. and a car like no other. He had Magnum 500's put on the car early on. The original Mach 1 pressed steel 14x7 deep dish wheels and Mach 1 wheel covers were put back on the car since it was equipped that way originally. A set of Magnum 500's with Firestone Firehawk radials go with the car to save the 70's vintage Firestone Wide Ovals. The authentic factory window sticker. production line build sheet. ( found under the seat). 1970 advertising. nbsp;and owners manual. accompany the car. There's also other documentation papers that come in a file showing significant service and ownership benchmarks. During Yates 35. 00 miles. it was serviced regularly at his dealership. He sold the car to the Smith Family in Doniphan MO around 1977. Avid car collectors. this Mustang was retired and kept in their personal museum for over eighteen years. After a few more years in MO. it made it's way to West Virginia. I bought the car from a couple that have owned it for the last 15 years. It now shows 39. 00 + miles. In the photos below you can read the window sticker. significant decals/castings/ part numbers. the production buck tag. VIN plate. and more. Two Marti Reports confirm the rarity of this car. Although the combination of options can create mind boggling Marti statistics. I think you'll find this to be an amazing piece of history made possible because it was special ordered by a Ford Dealer. This is the only 1970 Medium Red Mustang Mach 1 with the 428 CobraJet. automatic. black interior. a tachometer. and . port window slats. with Air Conditioning. Clearly. a unique combination of the most desirable options. "One made of 200. 00 produced". Little wonder it was in a museum for eighteen years. I am no Mustang expert. and although the car is not restored to cosmetic perfection. it is in wonderful condition. It's been fun to discover the history and authenticity of the components on this car. But. it's time to place the car with a Mustang collector that wants a very special car. I will not attempt to restore or refurbish anything on this car. You'll buy exactly what you see. and if you have questions. within reason.
