1970 Ford Thunderbird Special Brougham 2 Door Bucket Seats 460
You are bidding on a 1970 Ford Thunderbird Brougham 2 Door. A Deluxe Marti Report is included. This is an Arizona car, and was sold right here in Phoenix, just 5 miles away from my house.
The car still retains its original light Yellow paint (and still has a nice shine) and has the Deluxe Ginger Interior. It did originally have a Brown Alligator Vinyl Roof when new, which was removed years ago to prevent any potential roof damage. Note, that you can still get the original Cayman vinyl top material from SMS in Oregon. I have owned the car for about 15 years, and had promising intentions to fully restore the car, but have too many projects, and this solid driver needs to go to a new owner. I did buy & install many new and some NOS Ford parts over the years. I also have many, many receipts for the new owner. Receipts total way more than I am asking for the car.
Note that this Thunderbird is an upgraded model that had theSpecial Brougham Option, which is very rare – just a few were made like this! Original options included: Hopsack Ginger Cloth/VinylHigh Back Bucket Seats, Plush Carpeting, Auto Seat Back Release, AM-FM with Door & Rear Seat Speakers, Reclining Power Passenger Seat, Tilt Rim-Blow Wheel,Console, Power Windows & Seats,Special Auxillary Grille Lamps; Body Mouldings. The rear end is a 9 3/8” with 2.80 ratio gears.
The car does have a Salvage Title, but has never been in an accident or flood. The reason for the salvage title is that it was sold to a wrecking yard back in the 1990’s. I rescued or bought the car from the yard, complete before it was parted out. The only parts missing were the steering column and seat belts, both of which have been replaced with the correct parts. The title is in my name. It would be very easy to get the car inspected and change the title to Restored Salvage.
This Thunderbird currently has a 1969 460 V8 engine and C6 transmission (the original trans which the car was born with). The engine came out of a 1969 Continental Mark 3. The 460 engine runs great, idles nicely, no smoke or funny noises. The 460 is an big upgrade to the original 429, since it has more cubic inches, more torque, and also has the rare and desireable C9VE-A High Compression Heads. Note, the engine is not a POLICE INTERCEPTOR engine, just the decal is.
The engine has many new parts which were installed before the engine went into the car, including new: Timing chain, Water Pump, Thermostat, Motor Mounts, 600 cfm Holley Carb, New Distributor, Plugs & Motorcraft wires, Oil Pump High Volume (NOS Ford 429 Cobra Jet #C9AZ-6600-A), Exhaust Heat riser tube (NOS Ford #C9UZ-9652-A), Fuel Pump & Filter.
The C6 Transmission-is original to the car as I can tell. Shifts fine. Very small leak if it sits for a long time. I replaced the Trans Pan with a new one (NOS Ford #E5TZ-7A194-D), also it has a new vacuum modulator.
The Power Steering system is all new! New Pump, all P/S lines, and I have upgraded the Gear Box with a 14:1 Ratio, that was custom built by Benchworks in Scottsdale, AZ. This upgrade was not cheap (more than $300), but the result is fantastic! Brakes are also all new. New Master Cylinder, Front Pads, Power Booster Check Valve, Bled system-work great!
Suspension is new, with new Front Upper Control Arm Shafts, Upper/Lower Control Arm Bushings, Front and rear Shocks (Monroe Sensatracs), Upper/Lower Ball Joints, Sway Bar Bushings (Polyurethane), Rear-Rear Control Arm bushings(4), Upper Control Arm Bushings(2), and Trac Bar Bushings(2)
Cooling System is working fine, it has the original Radiator #D0SE-B1”, it has been boiled out & very clean. New Thermostat, Water Pump, Upper/Lower Radiator Hoses.
The Fuel System has a new 600 cfm Holley Carb, Cleaned out gas tank, New Sending Unit Strainer, New Fuel Line Hoses/Clamps, Fuel Pump & Filter, Gas Pedal & Spring, Gas Cap.
Electrical/Heat/AC: New Power Window Motors in Front Doors & Rear Pass, New Master Power Window Switches (quad 4), New Pass Door Single Window Switch, AM-FM radio was rebuilt (but just AM works now), not sure why. New Rear Seat Speakers, New Ignition Switch, New Key Cylinder, Tilt works good. Clock rebuilt w/a Quartz Conversion-very accurate! Has newer Sanden A/C Compressor instead of the old York. Windshield Washer Reservoir (NOS Ford #C8TZ-17618-A).
Many miscellaneous new parts were installed including a NOS T-Bird Nose Emblem #D0SZ-8213-A, NEW Trunk Drains, NEW Courtesy Light Switches, New Tail lens’ gasket to body, NEW Electronic Turn Sequencer Unit, New Fan Belts, Power Window Relay, Blower Motor Relay, Most Stainless mouldings have been Polished.
It does need some interior work, as there a few tears in the seat, and cracks in the dash pad. The driver’s door panel is in the trunk, as it needs some repairs, but I have all parts. The power windows need some work, new switches have been installed, but needs more troubleshooting.
This car does have some lower quarter rust on each side. This is usually due to the rubber trunk drains rotting out & leaking water in the trunk. I’ve had 3 of these cars & all of them had this issue, even though it’s from rust free Phoenix, AZ. Should be an easy fix for any competent body shop to address. The roof is light surface rust only. No pitting, and no damage. The deck lid does have a few dents on top, but again, easy fix when the car is painted. There is no rust on the deck lid or the hood.
This car can be driven around town, but I would not recommend trying to drive it cross country. It probably needs new tires for high speed travel, as they have some dry cracking. Good battery. This car can ship as a running and driving car. It does not overheat & turns very nicely due to the new custom upgraded 14:1 ratio steering box. I will assist in getting the car to your local shipper, as long as it is in the Metro Phoenix area. The Brake lights, Headlights, Hazards Reverse Lights & Sequential Turn Signals all work. The horn need a new Rim-Blow Steering Wheel Switch, which any Mustang Vendor has. The A/C has a newer type Sanden Compressor & it used to work until a few years ago, it probably needs a charge.
Sold as is, but come and drive it around and you will really like this car, as it is a nice cruisers & the fastback style looks very sporty. Other than the low quarter panels, this a rust Free Arizona car. The floor pan, and frame, etc all look like new.
I have many more pics, just request and I will send them.
One more thing that may be of interest to you. I do have access to a 1970 Thunderbird complete sunroof, which was cut from a parts car. If you are interested in adding a factory sunroof option to this car, it is a straight forward process, and should be done before putting the new vinyl top on. I can get the sunroof complete for just $150, but this must be picked up locally in Phoenix, and cannot be shipped. Note the sunroof would be for sale at this price, only to the buyer of this car. Thanks!
