BODYWORK/TRIM

Driven a few hundred shakedown miles since completion and presenting much better than when it originally rolled down San Jose's storied assembly lines, this impressive drop-top has been transformed into a take-no-prisoners weekender that consistently headlines cruise nights.

You won't be staying under the radar with its professionally finished Gulfstream Blue on Colonial White paintwork, which has beencarefully applied over a very clean and straight body. HISTORY OF THE RETRACTABLE HARDTOP CONVERTIBLE

Beginning in 1952,The Lincoln Continental division of Ford spent almost two million dollars in R & D on developing & building a retractable hardtop under the direction of Ben Smith. When it was decided a retractable top would make the Continental too expensive, The Lincoln Division turned the project over to Ford, where Ben Smith tweaked his retractable mechanism to revolutionize Ford's top of the line Fairlane 500 (and later Galaxie). Ford spent an additional Eighteen million dollars on this project before the 1st Skyliner rolled off the Ford assembly lines. The Skyliner had only a three year run, from 1957-1959. It would be thirty five years before another automaker would venture into the retractable hardtop business.

The entire retractable mechanism this Skyliner has been professionally restored and completely rebuilt. It works to perfection! If you've never experienced the joy of pressing a single button and turning an all steel hardtop into an open convertible in less than 60 seconds, you're in for a treat. And here's a guarantee: take this retractable to a car show and park it next to ANY other classic, regardless of price - and IT will steal the show! Operate the top for spectators and they'll break into applause. I ought to know - I've owned a Geranium and White 1959 Skyliner for 25 years and still have it! And oh.. I've NEVER had a problem with the top's operation in all my years of ownership!

Here's a hint to keep your retractable working like it left the factory: Be sure to put the top up or down only when the car is on a LEVEL surface. Do that and you'll virtually insure tip-top operation for years to come.

ENGINE

Tilt this Ford's sculpted hood up and you'll find Ford's optional 352 cubic inch Thunderbird Special V8 that has been completely rebuilt to specs and dressed to impress. Introduced in 1958 as a high-end Ford and Mercury engine, this stout big block remained one of Dearborn's hottest factory options for many years. At the top of the 352 CID V-8 mill, a bright blue air cleaner draws wind in to a big 4-barrel carburetor that's juiced by a series of stainless fuel lines. Atomized octane passes through a cast iron intake manifold to correct, cast iron heads that are topped by painted and Ford-branded valve covers. At the front of those valve covers you'll see a correct fan and a tagged radiator. The radiator keeps the block cool via pliable hoses and modern screw clamps. Spark comes courtesy of a traditional points and distributor, which sequences fire between a Ford coil and fresh plug wires. Aesthetically,this convertible's bay presents a clean, mostly authentic appearance all the way from its Spartan horn and fresh decals to its reproduction batteryand Motorcraft oil filter. And best of all, the 352/300 horsepower engine fires instantly and sounds surprisingly beefy breathing through OEM-style exhaust.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

At the bottom of this Skyliner, a fully sorted undercarriage houses typically over-restored floors that are bolted to lots of factory-correct components. Nice enough to show but still fully drivable, this is the perfect compromise for enthusiasts who like to display their car and enjoy fun-filled weekends. Behind the beefy power plant, a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission spins torque to a familiar Ford 9-inch that's fitted with pleasant, highway-friendlygears. The car's suspension remains close to its original configuration, with factory power steering complementing factory control arms and traditional leaf springs. All of the chassis' parts are free of weathering, additional evidence that this Skyliner has seen only break-in miles since its complete restoration. Braking is quick and adequate thanks to fresh drums that occupy all four corners of that chassis. On the outside of those drums, 215/75R14SBR Coker whitewalls spin with a fresh set of spectacular Kelsey Hayes Wire Wheels with Blue insert spinners.

INTERIOR

2-tone paint is legendary for its characteristically '50s feel. And when paired with this hardtop convertible's airy interior, it creates the perfect culmination of style and sophistication.There's tight carpet that, thanks to low miles, still features rich blue loops. Front and center, a 2-tone dash hangsrestored Ford telemetry next to a correct Original push-button Ford AM radio.

COUTTS INDEX REVEALS CLASSIC CARS AS TOP PERFORMING PASSION INVESTMENT DURING 2014

• Classic cars* rise 40% in 2014 and up nearly four fold since 2005
• 2015 out performed 2014 and 2016 so far is outpacing 2015
• Watches show biggest drop during 2014
• Stamps and coins, only assets to increase over nine consecutive years
• Coins continue to rise, up 176% over nine years and up 9% in 2014

Classic cars increased in value by 40% during 2014, and have increased in value nearly four fold, since 2005, according to the latest edition of the Coutts Index. In its second year, the report shows that while passion investments have increased just 0.8% during 2014, this masks the diversity of returns of the various underlying categories which have increased overall by 80% (local currency terms) since 2005.

The Index aims to provide the global benchmark for monitoring the performance of passion assets. Developed in conjunction with Fathom Consulting, the Coutts Index captures the price return in local currency (net of the holding costs) of 14 passion assets across two broad categories: trophy property and alternative investments. Alternative investments can be further broken down into fine art, collectibles and precious items. The Coutts Index also incorporates a real estate component supplied by Savills World Research and fine art prices from Mei Moses®.

Highlights from this year’s results include:

• Collectibles– coins have appreciated every year, up 176% since 2005. By contrast, Fine Wine was the only Collectable to see prices fall in 2014, down more than 9% in the third consecutive year of contraction after rapid price growth in 2006-07
• Fine Art– of all the Fine Art categories, Traditional Chinese Art has seen the greatest overall price growth since 2005, more than doubling over the period. However, this was the only art category to fall in 2014 with prices contracting 13%.
• Precious Items– 2014 was not a strong year for Jewellery or Watches with price growth for the former dropping from more than 14% in 2013 to under 2% in 2014. The average price of watches contracted by more than 17% last year, undoing some of the progress made since the recession.
• Property– despite some of the headlines regarding London’s super-prime real estate market, 2014 was actually an unremarkable year for Trophy Properties – divided into residential properties (luxury properties in ten prime global city locations) and leisure properties (in the world’s most desirable leisure destinations), with the former virtually unchanged and the latter falling by 2%. This is against a backdrop of double digit increases before the 2008 financial crisis.

Mohammad Kamal Syed, Head of Financial Advice and Investment Solutions at Coutts, said: “At a time of paltry interest rates, we continue to see lots of interest from the wealthy in finding somewhere worthwhile and out of the ordinary to put their money. Passion assets maintain their appeal, indeed the majority of passion assets we’ve tracked have risen over the past 12 months.
