2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT 2500 8.1L Big Block Allison 5 Speed 4x4 Ext Cab Leather
This has been my personal truck for the past 3 years, I purchased it at 86k miles from the second owner.
I have used this truck to tow a skid steer short distances and vehicles around 1-2 times a month for the past few years and it never let me down. Tows unbelievably well, Allison transmission is impressive on downhills and engine has great low end power. Body on truck is not perfect and does have a few small dents.
I purchased this truck from Vermont and the previous owner did a full line-x bed and frame liner before any rust started. When I purchased the truck the line-x done on the frame was still holding up but starting to peel in a few spots. Overall though it had very minimal rust. This past winter I started to see surface rust in the rear so I removed the bed, coated any rust with inhibitor primer, and went over the rear with Herculiner bedliner which I had left over from another project. The only rust I found when doing so was surface rust and the frame is structurally in great shape. The Herculiner should have no problem lasting through the harsh New England winters for many more years before needing attention again. I would recommend doing the front over as it is now starting to show a few spots. The only spot I was unable to get on the rear was under the spare tire as I was unable to drop it down, it still has the old line-x on it which is starting to peel and show some rust. I believe it needs a new spare tire mechanism. It is starting to get some rust spots on driver rocker and small rust bubbles are beginning on bottom inner of a few doors and the passenger rocker. If taken care of now this is something that will be an easy fix.
Unfortunately a few months ago I accidentally put a dent in the front bottom lower of the passenger bed and rear cab corner. It has not bothered me enough yet to get it fixed but is something I looked into. I got a quote of $850 to have this dent and the small rust on the rockers and doors repaired locally. If you can weld and paint it is a relatively easy fix, however it has not been that noticeable of a dent so I haven't bothered yet to repair it. It only will require the "front lower bedside section" which is around $70 as well as some work on the rear passenger cab corner. I did a basic rattle can repair to the cab corner but that would need attention as well if you decide to fix the bed. Otherwise the truck body is in very good shape with only a few small dings.
Mechanically the truck is very sound. Engine and transmission are strong and run great. Oil has been changed every 3000 miles with full synthetic. I changed the transmission fluid and filter twice since I got it with TE-295 heavy duty fluid. It is very easy to do with the spin on filter and the old fluid came out very clean both times. I also have changed the transfer case and both diff fluids as well since owning the truck. It had all brake lines replaced with coated lines by previous owner and they are still in very good shape. I recently put in a new fuel filter and changed the rear part of the fuel line out in the process as it had some rust and I had the filter out anyway. I also recently changed out the passenger side wheel bearing with a Timkin assembly and the driver side was replaced by the previous owner and still in good shape. I put heavy duty brakes on the truck when I first got it and it has always stopped very well. I recently put in a heavy duty fan clutch which is noisy when running full but I enjoy the better cooling it provides. I still have the original which I will include with the truck as well. It has newer plugs/wires and K&N intake system. I recently replaced the cat back exhaust with an OEM AC Delco replacement muffler and walker pipes as the old muffler was starting to crack and show age. This truck just recently got a Blackbear performace custom tune which has made an incredible difference in the overall driveability. This truck has the 11.5" 14 bolt rear locking differential which provides unbelievable traction.
These engines are notorious for being noisy when cold and it has always had some "piston slap" noise when it is cold but once warm goes away fully. This is considered normal with these engines and when these trucks first came out GM released a bulletin stating this has no effect on reliability. It has never bothered me and has been like that since I owned it and the previous owner had said the same since he owned it.
The interior is in overall good shape. Has four doors and full non-heated leather seats. It has the Bose sound system with steering wheel controls, CD, and tape player. It has a remote start system which works great and is very convenient. It has the automated digital dual climate control system, On-star (needs to be updated from the dealer if used), and power extending mirrors with turn signals integrated. The driver seat cover was replaced by previous owner and isn't perfect but looks ok. The windows have always been slow when going up but always go up fine. Otherwise interior is in very good shape.
I changed out the rear trailer plug when I first got it as the old one had broken off. I have since been using one that I have yet to mount up permanently and been disconnecting it when not in use. If you would like to mount it permanently it will only require a few quick tack welds. I will also include the heavy duty rear trailer hitch with the purchase.
Overall this truck has been everything I could ask for and has not once let me down once. The only reason I am selling it is I am currently looking to purchase a smaller truck. This is a comfortable, strong, reliable truck and with some minor body work it would be a very clean truck as well. I hope that these issues I have addressed are not a deterrent for anyone as I like to be as honest and upfront as possible when selling vehicles. I am sure I may have missed things but I tried to find all the issues that I know of and address them above. This is however a truck that you could just hop in and drive as is if you so choose.
*I will still be using the truck until it is sold so mileage will be slightly higher than when listed*
