Just one year after the success of the Bora, aserati’s flagship car, he Merak was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1972. The Merak was a smaller sports car carrying a longitudinal V6 amidship and with a 2+2 configuration, nown as the “Baby Bora”. The Merak was introduced as a direct competitor to the Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari’s Dino 308 GT4. Giugiaro was commissioned to design the Merak after his success with the visually stunning Bora. The new smaller sports car resembled the Bora from the front all the way back to the doors. In March 1976 at the Geneva Motor Show, aserati unveiled the Merak SS. A lighter more powerful Merak now sharing the dashboard configuration of the Bora, arried a 220hp V6 and more conventional clutch and brake system. With less than 1000 SS Merak’s ever produced and being the most desired of the two models, hese rare Italian thoroughbreds make a perfect alternative to its Ferrari and Lamborghini counterparts.
This stunning 1978 Maserati Merak SS Coupe left the Maserati Modena factory in November of 1977 and was invoiced to the United States. The car has just come out of a long term storage and private collection in the Midwest, his incredibly rare Italian thoroughbred is finished in Blue Serra Metalizato over Rosso leather interior. Believed to have covered only 23,120 miles from new this Merak has had recent paint job and shows incredibly well with a completely re-trimmed interior in stunning Rosso. The dashboard is the original flocking and the center console is the original material still in remarkable condition. Most of the rubber seals have been replaced with correct matching parts and all of the mechanical parts replaced on the car were from a Maserati specialty shop. The engine has just undergone a thorough tune up and includes a recent valve adjustment, arb rebuild, lugs, ires, ap and rotor, luids, oses, elts and a thorough sorting of the electrical equipment and wiring. There is a brand new clutch, new water pump and pulley, long with new exhaust gaskets. The car has brand new Michelin XWX tires and the original Maserati wheels have been professionally refinished. The car starts right up and idles smoothly and free from any smoke. The car runs through the gears well and the engine pulls incredibly strong through the RPM range. The engine has a great note and has healthy compression numbers on all cylinders. The car stays cool running down the road and the carbs are all tune to proper spec. There is no rust to be found on the car or on the undercarriage nor does there appear to be any type of accident history or any type or repair work. The body is nice and straight and shows incredibly well. All of the electrical items appear to be working and operating including all of the gauges, ll of the lights including the pop up headlights and even the original radio. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding and incredibly rare Merak SS finished in a stunning color combination.
