Description

1966 MGB GT - Selling my 1966 (titled as 1967) early MGB GT due to lack of use. If you are looking for a good looking, reat running, onest, riginal MG with interesting provenance, hen this car requires further investigation! Odometer shows 50,418, nd while I cannot guarantee this, ast receipts, nd condition of car confirm this to be very close indeed!Car was originally purchased by U.S. serviceman in Belgium, nd brought back to U.S., nd registered in 1967. The VIN confirms that this car was actually built in 1966. I bought the car from second owner, fter car was parked in garage for a 20 year nap due to failed slave cylinder.MECHANICAL -Original engine had seized during its long nap, nd I had the engine rebuilt at Sportscar Warehouse in Arlington, exas. Motor had crankshaft ground, ew main and rod bearings, ew oil pump, ew gasket set, alves ground. Transmission is original rifle-bolt, speed non-overdrive gearbox with non-syncro first gear. Gearbox shifts sweetly, ncluding second gear down shifts. Of course, new clutch was installed. Hydraulic systems, lutch and brake, ebuilt or replaced as needed. New brakes and hydraulic lines all around. Original shocks have also been rebuilt. I also had sport muffler installed, hich I think is Monza, r similar, nd it also sounds terrific. Car has 5 matching tires purchased after rebuild. I just had a pinched tube, nd I have a replacement tube on order The speedometer stopped working after rebuild, nd it has been repaired. I have receipts for all of my work. Like most MG's, his car leaks a little oil from the engine and transmission, nd a little gasoline around the fuel pump. Some of this may stop upon regular use.INTERIOR - These early metal dash are the coolest! This is the original finish on dash, nd while there is a scrape or two, he originality and patina outweigh perfection! All of the toggle switches work. Driver and passenger seats are recent UK-sourced black leather piped white seat covers, xactly matching the originals! I also bought new webbing and foam cushions for the front seats, o they look and sit as new! Rear seat is original and in excellent condition. Carpets appear original, ut I had custom period black and white coco mats made, nd they truly fit the car perfectly! BMC Radio is hooked up and operational, ut the car needs ignition suppression to cut out the engine static. Steering wheel is new, ut the centre emblem is original. Heater is hooked up and is operating condition as is its fan. Wipers function properly as do the turn indicators.EXTERIOR - Is there a better MG color other than British Racing Green? I doubt it. This car was painted once back in the late 1970's or early 80's, nd it still looks good; but not great. The body is extremely straight and appears rust free, aving spent it's life here in the Southwest. There is a ding/dimple on the aluminum bonnet. The paintwork has nice shine, ut it is getting thin. There are a few marks on the windscreen from old wipers, nd the side window glass have lines where the glass rubbed against window rubbers. While this is NOT a show car, t is a very presentable driver. I have always kept this car garaged, s did the second owner, nd from looking over the car, t does appear to have lead a sheltered life.UNDER THE BONNET - Pop open the bonnet, nd you see the original motor, ainted in its correct maroon, ith yellow fan assembly. Its a little dirty up against the bulkhead with very little surface rust. Please note the original sound matting on the bonnet. I never did get around to the under bonnet detailing, ut with a little elbow grease, his clean compartment would go from very good to great.DRIVING -Like a good MGB should, his car usually starts on the first or second try, f it has been driven or started lately! Once the car warms, nd the choke is pushed in, he car settles down to its 800-900 rpm gurgle. The transmission operation is sweet, s it should be, ith short, ifle bolt shifts between the gears. Second gear downshifts are super! When cruising, he large steering wheel is fingertip controlled. The car runs, rives straight, nd stops smoothly, nd it's hard to imagine that this car is really over 50 years old/young. The car will emit some white smoke at highway speeds, ut I think that the car has not yet been fully broken in from its rebuild.SUMMARY - This is truly a hard to find, arly B GT. Try finding another BGT that does NOT have factory back up lights. I have original paperwork tracing purchase in Belgium, nd entrance into US. I bought this car because it is also a rust free, olid original car, nd many, f not most of these early 60's MGB's are really a rolling collection of parts. I have more money invested into this car than its asking price, ut it is just tying up my garage, nd it is time for someone else to enjoy and cherish this important car.
