Chassis number 1S20391 was purchased by the current owner in December of 1979. Prior to his purchase, he car was seized by the Chicago Police Department and used as a "sting operation" car in the early '70s. The car was eventually retired of duty and spent some time in the Chicago Police impound lot, o which it owes its several dents and body panel damage. While attending the Police Department's impound auction, he current owner was just shy of the winning bid for this E-type and was forced to follow up weeks later with the winning bidder about purchasing this car. When he went to see the car, ork had already been started to repair the dents and dings acquired at the Police Department. A deal was made and the car was brought back to the current owners garage in the Chicago area. Not much was done to the car after that point. There were some issues with the fuel pumps and an external auxiliary fuel pump was used to move the car around for a short period of time. The project shortly came to a standstill and the car sat in the garage until the early 2000s when the car made the move with the owner to the Southeast. This E-type then found its new home in another barn where it has sat to this very day.
1S20391 is a numbers matching very early production Series 3 E-type V-12.It is one of the first 391 cars built for the left hand drive markets. Left hand drive production number started at 20000 and roughly 6119 LHD roadster examples were produced between 1971-1974. Total Roadster production is believed to be around 7990. The E-type currently has a clear Illinois title in the current owners name. It is a highly original and complete car. Odometer shows just over 41000 miles, hich although not confirmed or certified, s believed to be the original mileage due to the knowledge of the cars history. The body on the car is extremely solid. As stated earlier, he damage to the body is believed to root from its stay in the impound lot and time with the Chicago Police Department. The bumpers have decent chrome. However, he bumpers do have some dents and dings as well. The headlights, aillights, nd markers are really nice condition. Externally, he car has very little known rust. Rocker panels, loor pans, onnet lower panels, nd the trunk pan...all have held up beautifully over the years. The car has been stored inside and it really shows. I have several (over 200) photos of the car and more detail photos that I can send to any interested parties. The interior is very complete. A few trim items are missing such as the radio, ome of the plastic vents, tc. Seats are solid, eather is stiff. The gauges and dash panels are in decent shape, o cracked glass or delamination of face plates. Factory hardtop is included and the headliner is very nice. Trim on the hardtop is very complete and the rear window has no major cracks but does show some minor signs of typical plexiglass "star" cracks. The car also still has its soft top which although very complete, as seen better days. All of the bows, rim, nd latches are present. Windshield glass is all crack free and original to the car. Windshield frame is in wonderful shape with all of the trim still in tact. The car still retains its original wire wheels and Dunlop tires dated '72. Chrome on the wheels is in very good condition given the age and time they have sat. There is no spare wheel or tools/ books included with this car. Engine and transmission are numbers matching. Engine turns over freely with the starter. No attempts have been made to start the car. Internal condition of the engine is unknown at this point. Engine bay is extremely complete and does not show signs of any modifications. The rare four pipe muffler has broken loose from the exhaust but is included in the sale. This XKE of course has the automatic transmission which is believed to be in good working order as it was many years ago. However, nce again, can not attest to its current condition. Car also retains all of its brakes and rolls freely.
Overall, his numbers matching E-type will be a very nice car to restore. It is rare to find such a complete car that has not been be cut up, inkered with or parted out. 1S20391 has a significance in being a very early V-12 E-type. The car has an excellent color combination and shows properly with its factory hardtop. I encourage any and all questions on this vehicle. As mentioned earlier, do have over 200 photos and can get more if requested. I can send a link to photos. Message or request at bmxrams89 AT yahoo DOT com
